View Full Version : I thought Apple released iOS5 today?

Have Apple delayed the release of this today because of Mr Jobs sad demise?

Jonathan Ribee

Usually released sometime in the PM of US EST. Which starts about now-ish. Probably in the next couple of hours.

About 6 ish iirc from last time.

RIP Steve Jobs. He always lived life to the Macs.

It's out there now though getting a bit of a hammering to judge by the slow pace of the required iTunes 10.5 download that I'm doing.

I'd leave it a while. My download has crapped out three times and started again, and now absolutely crawling along. Also it's nearly 800MB. Hoooj.

Lion 10.7.2 and online recovery feature out today too, 880MB combined for my MacBook, which is slowly sucking them off the internet as I type.

I still get the Steve Jobs memorial page on the Apple UK site?? Has it been formally released?!

How's Lion working out for you Tony? I have avoided updating from 10.6 so far but am tempted to give it a go.....

Fine, though it has to be said I either don't use or have turned off most of the new features - I seldom use LaunchPad, I use MissionControl exactly as I used Spaces, have turned the ridiculous upside-down mouse scrolling off etc, so hardly any change from Snow Leopard! I'm actually far more interested in what this update brings as to my mind iCloud is by far the most interesting new Lion feature, and we've had to wait until today to get to see it. I suspect it's going to be too slow to be of much use though as typical broadband upload speeds are pretty hopeless - even with iTunes Match covering my 1000+ album iTunes library it would take an absolute age to back the rest of my data up. I love the idea though, it just needs a better network infrastructure, which certainly isn't Apple's fault.

Go into iTunes, look at your iphone/pad and in the summary tab is a button for the version update. You'll be prompted to get iTunes 10.5 first if that's not already installed.

I don't understand the hype. Can someone explain me why all mackies absolutely have to download the latest software update at the same time, as if their macs would explode without it.

Here you also see the genius of Apple's marketing guys. Imagine all the world awaiting the new Windows service pack... instead, all you get is cheap laughter from the mac community, saying that the Windows guys were again hoping that this update would finally cure the innumerable existing bugs. Apple, instead, sell their service packs as being milestones in the evolution of mankind. No doubt, it works.

I think I'd be the same. I'm happy with SL and don't really wanna upgrade all three machines to Lion for the sake of then find out I don't like it as much!

I'm happy with SnowLep myself but assuming that Lion will (now or soon) be needed to get the best out of cloud and ios5 - or am I mistaken?

Jonathan Ribee
12-10-11, 01:49 PM
Well I've got two machines to suck down the OSX and related updates, switched to iCloud on those OK. But the iOS5 updates keep crapping out as the servers are so busy the restore checks time out. Times to watch old Frasier episodes until people go to bed and then try again.

OS5 isn't as exciting as I thought it was going to be. It has about 5 minutes play time, and that's about it. Unless there's some hidden features I haven't found yet.

Because iCloud is going to be sooo cooool :)

Soeone told me today that iOS5 will also allow wireless streaming from an apple device to an Apple TV. Is this true? If so, it will have a big impact in the Corporate world (imagine presenting in front of a crowd via an iPad onto a big screen wirelessly!). I'll go out and buy 10 Apple TVs for the company pretty much immediately if this is the case and it works.

Well Dropbox has been there for quite some time and contrary to iCloud, at least you know what's going on and who has the rights to see what. Well I do hope that you can share your iCloud stuff with others can't you.

About the big impact on the corporate world, just hook your beamer to a small and silent barebone PC, pilot the latter from your android tablet (VNC is your friend) although I presume that even an iPad is somehow able to do so, which is probably an important factor when your customers are of the 'cool' kind (advertising, teachers, etc.).

Wireless HDMI can already be had, it's probably not yet perfect but if it works you won't even need an AppleTV or any other streamer thingy.

I removed lion from both macs that had it on and returned to Leopard, just far far to many issues when using other apps, or indeed trying to do anything useful.

The last straw on my macbook was at the office, when plugging an external monitor in the wireless stopped working, (no really)

Updating my iPad has failed three times now giving a 'update server not available' message. That's after everything else has been updated and waiting for the glacially slow process of backing up the iPad each time. In the words of James Marshall Hendrix, I think I'd better wait 'til tomorrow.

That's what I do at home, but it requires faffing that the (potential) Apple solution simply does not. The reality is, an Apple solution will just work, intuitively too for most, without any specialist knowledge. That is their USP at the end of the day - making simple solutions to problems their customers never really had before.

I should add this is the first time I am DL'ing on release day (personally, I want a shared calendar and photos/videos with my wife), and am wondering why given it took an hour to get iTunes 10.5, and have been stuck at 49 mins for the iOS5 DL for the last 20 mins...

download took 20 mins here, i had to use a legit apple usb cable though as the one i was using wouldn't allow the restore process to finalise properly for whatever reason.

all seems to be working dandy, despite losing all my apps that is, the 3GS seems faster so i'm happy with that.

I think it's cos OSX is so relatively untweakable (sp?) that it's nice when apple does it for you! Of course this only backs up the walled approach so many hate apple for. Oh and new toys syndrome I guess. I WANT MORE>>>>>

Mmm. iPhone done. iPad chugging away. I did manage to create duplicate copies of all my contacts, but only on one computer (iMac) and not Macbook or iOS devices. Not to hard to fix in the morning. Hungry now.

Tell it to just download, rather than download and update. It'll save the constant backing up.

It's just a proprietary name for a multiple desktop feature that can be found in just about every UNIX. I bet it's built into Windows these days too, and I bet it has an equally daft name. As I run a laptop with a fairly small screen I find it one of the more useful OS features and I have different app groups setup to open in different virtual desktops, one just selects the desktop with ctrl and it's number or double taps with two fingers on the mouse or trackpad to see the whole area. It's neat!

Thanks, fourth time was lucky! Sad git that I am, I'd gone to bed but the battery on my Kindle was flat so I got up and tried the download again.

Or setup 4-finger swipe to move between them. Sexy. Ctrl-left/right is my preference though.

I *love* being able to use 3-finger swipe right/left to go forward/back in firefox/chrome/safari. For lazy web browsing sessions it can't be beat.

For all that jazz, whole-disk crypto in Lion is the killer feature for me.

Not checked that out yet, what don't you like about it?

I've signed up with iCloud and turned on the 'Find My Mac' feature, which looks really cool - it enables tracking a stolen Mac, locking it, deleting all the user-data etc.

I love it! Lack of whole disk crypto was the main reason I hadn't dipped my toe in the Mac waters. Run it on an SSD (I use a 256GB OCZ) and you don't even notice the difference.

I'm downloading iOS 5 to my iphone right now - I was of the "meh" opinion until I saw that it really does support S/MIME... finally!

The greenpois0n jailbreak tool is ready for iOS 5 and, while not public yet, works on iPad/iPad2/iPhone 4S and most others. It should be along shortly :)

How much of a performance hit would I expect using a typical 500GB 7200 laptop drive? I've always steered away from this type of thing as I use Logic Express now and again and that likes fast HD access, though seems far happier since I threw 8GB RAM into my MacBook. SSD has been my major IT disappointment of recent years, superb technology that simply refuses to abide by Moore's Law - I should be able to afford it by now, but 500GB is still way too expensive. Disappointing that the latest iPod Touch / iPhone still only offer 64GB. I was really expecting that conventional motorised HDs would be as obsolete as CRT monitors by now.

Well this appears, for me at least, to be another steaming pile of crap from Apple. Granted, I'm not an up to date fanboi with my grotty old iPhone 3GS, but not a single non-Apple app now works. They all start and keel over immediately. Tried rebooting but it persists. Back to IOS4 when I get home I think.

Notification is quite neat although something Android had eons ago.

How do you change your iCloud / .me email password?

I can use the mail on webmail and iOS devices, but on the two macs it won't work. I think because when setting up (when in internet was chocca) it let me enter a password with no upper case characters. Which it shouldn't of. Can't find a solution on any support pages.

CLZ Music throws a bit of a wobbler when you upgrade to iOS5 on that iPhone 4. There is an updated version which I applied first - but it still went a bit mad anyway - losing cover thumbnails etc. Reinstall, re-export etc seems to have sorted it. Very quiet on CLZ fora though. Harumph.

To get it to auto-sync, yes. But you can manually sync it without power. I done it just last night.

The best thing about the OS is they've finally made the keyboard get out of the way when you scroll through previous text messages. Hurrah!

You can manually sync from the iPhone (within settings) or within iTunes itself.
