Watched a film the other night called 28 Days Later. Had some interesting music and I saw in the credits that a track by God Speed You Black Emperor featured, and remembered seeing mention of them on the forum before. Anyone any idea what album this track might have come from or recommend which album might be a good intro to their music?

Cheers

Its called "East Hastings" from their debut LP called ♯a♯∞ it was once quite hard to get on vinyl but I think it has been reissued... and it was omitted from that soundtrack...

GYBE are one of my favourite bands. For starters I recommend "Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven" a double LP. Its slow, methodical, paced, controlled, loud, somber, playful, weird. Sometimes it simply makes me ache. I use this stuff to get my head straight.

They also did a really essential EP called Slow Riot For New Zero Kanada which is a good companion piece to either. Yangqui UXO is also fine but not up to the caliber of "Lift Your Skinny Fists..." -- but thats no slur.

GYBE also spawned a few offshoots and connected bands. Last weekend I picked up two from spinoff/ofshoot "A Silver Mt Zion" whose two LPs "Horses in the Sky" and the even better "This Is Our Punk-Rock," Thee Rusted Satellites Gather + Sing are IMV important GYBE adjuncts.

What they all produce is fabulous music. Its worth taking your time over.

Ahh well what's a little f between riends?

I forgotted: A Silver Mt Zion are on tour! Jun 6 at Camden's KOKO... looks like they're bringing on the full band as Constellation's Website mentions 3/4 of Black Ox Orkestar are coming on tour with them -- again, another peripherally connected band, they play European Jewish folk music with 2 LPs under their belt AFAIK.

If you like Zorn's Bar Kochba (which features many of the members of Masada) you will probably like Black Ox Orkestar.

A Silver Mt Zion
Mary Lee's Corvette
George Thorogood

...and, erm... Ted Nugent at the ABC.

Wonder if my wife will go on holiday on her own this year... Hmm! Better not ask.

As recently covered, 'f# a# oo' is different on CD and vinyl, so you really do have to get both.

Believe me, you do.

However some of the spin-offs are under-essential, the worst ranking one in my view is Frankie Sparo - My Red Scare.

Just showing off but I have a record by Ultrasound (the American one, think there was a Brit one) which has two tracks on one side, each playing at a different speed. Comes packaged with a dry leaf. Very nice.

Must dig it out, can't have played it for years.

Now that I didn't know. Very cool. Whats different about the CD as I held out for the vinyl and paid premium (only to see it reissued -- story of my life).

This is getting to be an FAQ!

There are some tracks in common between the CD and the LP, but there are different tracks on each too. I prefer the CD version, that's the one I'd like to have on vinyl :-)

Is the vinyl currently available then? All my GYBE is on CD and as F#A# ∞ is my favourite of theirs I'd probably buy again if it's different.

Constellation seem to keep all the GYBE vinyl in print, it always seems to be available in Selectadisc and the like.

I got 'Lift your Skinny Fists...' the other week on vinyl in Avalanche records in Edinburgh. Its not bad... quite good but a bit adolescent and gloomy TBH. Sigur Ros by comparison are not afraid to be a bit joyful in their music.

Got "Lift your skinny fists..." on vinyl this afternoon from Sister Ray. Got it playing at the moment and like what I've heard so far.
Also got Explosions in the Sky - The Earth is not a cold dead place, which I've not listened to yet - up next

I couldn't get into that, I prefered the first one. It just seems to ramble on not really going anywhere and theres bits where they just play the same note over and over again like they can't think of anywhere to go, just end the song damn it!;) There are good bits though. Saw them last year, the 'spokesman' is a right weeney. 'Thank you so much for your time'. F'off you've already got my money and your not convincing anyone. Grrr

Nope, I'm all for rambling if theres a point to it, in this case there isn't.

Seconded. I bought that when it came out, couldn't see any point to it at all, sold it immediately.

Took my CD transcription of F#A# ∞ vinyl in the car today. Perfect for the M25.

Thirded, there are so many better things in this genre. I'll do you a copy though Fox...

Or you can buy my LP if you want it Fox :) Seriously, don't, its carp. Even the side 4 etchings aren't that great.

Explosions In The Sky

Describing "Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Die, Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Live Forever", one reviewer said:

"Employing fifths, section A must always lead to B; section B must always refer back to A; this should be repeated thrice, sotto voce; followed by a sudden, bursting crescendo of equivalent duration; reprise section A; fade to end. Instructions for next track: see previous, play in alternate key."

Listening now, I think s/he was mostly correct.

Ahh etched sides are in aren't they? I noticed Taak has one of them.

I downloaded EitS in my lunchbreak over the P2P networks to have a listen. Its OK, and it has shortcomings -- if I'd written/recorded it I'd not have released it. It would make a good giveaway. Its a sketchbook of an idea and needs exposition but its not as bad as some make out (mind you I am notoriously easy to please). There are no new ideas for me but it could serve as an introduction to the genre for someone who might then explore the genre and move onto better things... It don't think its bad enough to put people off...

Its a start (and everybody has to start somewhere) but I think it needs more work.

I need more Sunno)))

All I've heard are the samples on amazon.com

Anyone know of any longer sample sites?

The bits I've heard sound like guitar drone notes over the top of whale music. I'm sure it must get better.

You can download some live videos from the website iirc. One of them is quite good which is why I bought the LP.
What is the genre? They sound like post rock to me except they don't seem to have any understanding of why post rock is good.

That was one of the bits I liked to be honest, but then I found Sunno)))'s Flight of the Behemoth to be immensely jolly :)

Isn't "Earth" something to do with Khanate or am I in the wrong universe yet again?

Khanate have bits of Earth in them.

Earth 2 is essential, great album cover too.
