A friend who I shared a house with had some and I thought they were very good. For the money that's a bargain. I have a feeling that they were around 400 quid new.

Well, that makes me feel a little better but Wife remains unimpressed!

More like £600 when last sold. Very substantial real wood veneered cabinets and very good drivers too. Quite sensitive, will work with a valve amp of 20 Watts upwards very nicely. A steal at £143. What else could you have bought anyway?
Also they are one of not many speakers that your wife might actually like the look of!

Also nicely suits very powerful solid sounding transistors - like HBs own amps.

Mmmm, so my goal of free hifi is still on course it seems, although mine dont come with the rather nice matching stands.

Just a bit of an update on these speakers. I have been living with them for a month os two now and must admit I have grown quite fond of them.

Very lively and exciting sounding but refined with it and they sound much bigger than they have any right to do given there size. They remind me a little of some Royd Saphires I owned many years ago, only with more balls.

I couldnt resist a quick peek inside and must say these are possibly the best made pair of speakers that I have owned. The cabinet is incredibly well braced and the baffle is at least an inch thick. The crossover looks to be of a very high standard.

I only have them on a pair of home made stands at the momment as I had to tell Wife that I bought them to re-sell! We move house anytime soon so even though I miss the bass extention of my DIY speakers I may well give them a decent chance to shine when we get settled in. If nothing else they will prove a valuable bench mark for improving my Omni experiments.

If anyone comes across a pair give them a go, I doubt you would be dissapointed.

Fully in aggreement with Paul here..
They are wonderfull speakers even on low powered british integrateds, no limits for source..
I ran a OA21s with CDi on Quartets, a true giant killer for peanuts.

a fine alternative to Royd 7L, though I slightly prefer the better of these.

Quite handy and wife friendly looking with original Quartet stands, better sounding with the S1 type definately..

Are they closed box?
Any similarities in presentation to Heybrook HB1's as I've always wanted a slightly more refined version of these extremely lively classic speakers.

My current Monitor Audio R852/MD fit the bill quite well but not the prettiest in Black Ash.

i had some for some time and have to admit they have a charm & presentation of their own, different sounding than most speakers i have tried. they didnt really rock on my valve amp but were so easy to drive. they were more suited to gentle music with which they were very sweet, very very open and easy on the ear. i paid £100 with dedicated stands around 12 months ago, they were a real bargain. the cabinets are superb if they are to your taste..quite fancy with the burr style strips along the front edges.

they are reap ported but it doesnt do a huge amount if i remember correctly.

i dont think that there is much a better at what they do well for that sort of money.
