Some elderly relatives of mine are getting rid of a pair of Quad ESL 63 electrostatic speakers. I reckon they are too good to just throw down the tip, but I've no idea what they're worth, or if anyone wants them. Anyone care to hazard a guess as to a fair price? They won't have any packaging and they've spent quite a few years stored in a spare bedroom so they couldn't be described as mint, but they did work last time they were used (a long time ago).

ESL 63s in very good condition and without mechanical or electrical faults can go for between 1,000 and 1,500 quid a pair, depending on age and finish. You'd need to check them carefully for damage etc. as repairs aren't cheap and need to be factored into the price. At the right price, you won't have much trouble finding a buyer for them.

Thats a fair bit more than I thought! Lucky they mentioned it to me, as they were definitely heading for the tip, and they could certainly use the money.
I'll have to lug them over to my house to check them out.

ESL-63s are a very special loudspeaker indeed. Especially in the right room with the right amps (as ever).

Check them out to make sure they're working if so then they are worth good money

OTOH unserviced 20-25 year old ESL63s are not worth more than £200-£300 and will probably cost £800-£1000 to have serviced at Quad. For reference 'One Thing Audio' refurbish panels for £100, a pair of speakers has 8 panels.

And this completed EBay auction seems relevant. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Quad-Esl-63-Electrostatic-Loudspeakers_W0QQitemZ9721895553QQcategoryZ14993QQ ssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I might be interested in adding to my collection of broken ESL63, depending on age etc.

Thanks for that - I won't be seeing them again till next month but I'll tell them not to dispose of them, and try and assess the Quads serviceability.

I use a variation on the theme,

Access to both sides of the film while stretched is useful. It helps with the glueing and allows the application of the coating before cutting the panel free.

If anybody has defunct ESL63s in their spare room, I'm still in the market.

Fen.
I'd not ask myself what's their price on second hand market but.............could they fit my system?
I would give them a chance, if you have amps.

Watch out!!!

these are very dangerous items to have in your house.

However, out of my own good nature, I'll dispose of them for you, all you have to do is send them to me. Trust me, you'll thank me later....

Blimey, I didn't expect this lot to re-surface after all these months. But if anyone is interested in purchasing, then make an offer. I spent Christmas with the owners and their daughter is planning to put them on fleabay in a month or so, but I suspect they'll just be glad to be spared the effort.
