View Full Version : Densen amplifiers and Kimber 8 TC nbaptista 23-05-06, 02:36 PM Has anybody experience with Kimber 8 TC? I canīt have a demo before buy it, so a little help will be welcome. Is it a good match for Densen? seandtaylor 23-05-06, 06:27 PM I think it's a high-capcitance (litz) cable. If you don't get any positive feedback I'd be very wary of a high capacitance cable on a wide-bandwidth amplifier like the densen. I'd be more inclined to go for something low capacitance like Nordost (which I think may be what Densen use for development). nbaptista 23-05-06, 06:30 PM I think it's a high-capcitance (litz) cable. If you don't get any positive feedback I'd be very wary of a high capacitance cable on a wide-bandwidth amplifier like the densen. Can you explain what is a high-capacitance cable and how this is related with the amplifier? seandtaylor 23-05-06, 07:01 PM Every cable has capacitance, inductance and resistance, per meter of length. How high or low is each is determined by the material and geometry, but inductance and capacitance are a trade-off: if one is high the other is low. The problem with capacitance is that as frequency increases capacitance starts to look more and more like a short-circuit. Even if it doesn't cause damage to the amplifier it can (allegedly) provoke instability which causes audible degradations. Since Densen amplifiers are very wide bandwidth I would suspect that they might risk instability with a high capacitance speaker cable. Of course you can't get rid of capacitance altogether, since doing so necessarily raises the inductance. Inductance is the opposite of capacitance, and will attenuate the high frequencies. If there's too much inductance it will sound rolled off. So there's a trade off. I personally like the twin conductor type cables with no braiding since they're low in capacitance and not too high in inductance. Cables with many individually insulated conductors that are braided are high capacitance. Of course it might just work, but I also own a Densen amp and I would never buy a high capacitance speaker cable without a good long demonstration, to make sure it sounds OK and to make sure the amp doesn't get hot. nbaptista 23-05-06, 07:07 PM You might be right.A week ago Iīve got problems with the Transparent The Wave 100,a very good cable, but my amplifier fot twice when I turn it on did a hhuummmmmm. Just after swap the Transparent for the Qed SA,the amplifier didnīt anymore the hhummm.I found the amplifier get unstable because of the Transparent cable. Thank for the advise. pap247 05-05-07, 05:19 AM Do you think that Atlas Hyper would be a good combination with a Densen amp? Technincal Data: A+B Resistance (Ohms/m @ 20°C) 0.0060 A+B Capacitance (pF/m) 163.98 A+B Inductance (ĩH/m @ 1 kHz) 0.230 Sobryma 05-05-07, 11:49 AM When I was swapping around my cabling (eventually settling on VdH) a dealer did recommend Atlas as the best they had tried with Densen. I've used Nordost with Densen in the past and wasn't too keen....might just be me. Thomas Sillesen 09-05-07, 02:05 PM Hi, Kimber should not give problems with our amps. However it is allways adviced to keep signalcables and speakercables far away from each other. The reason for this is obviously that unshielded signal cables, will pick up high frequency emitting from speakercables which can result in oscilation. This is a problem which is not only related to our products, but to all amplifiers when using non-shielded signalcables. Steven Toy 09-05-07, 08:06 PM I'm using Mogami 2972 with mine as recommended (and sold to me) by the Densen dealer in Loughborough. early 10-05-07, 02:35 AM I've used Kimber 8tc , although with Rega not Densen . It's a very good cable but it's way too expensive , RA will give you a 30 day trial if your unsure . As an experiment I tried TNT's twisted twin cat5 cables and found them just as good as the 8tc's and they only cost me about Ģ25 to make 2 x 3m lenghts . Harthold 10-05-07, 05:58 AM Kimber is definetely a superb cable. I have been using 8tc with NAIM gear for more than 20 years(instead of the recommended obtrusive stuff which I bought toghether with my first gear) with smashing results. Doesnīt RUSS ANDREWS provide free trial period ? |
