Hi
Sorry for my ignorance but does anybody know if a Linn Troika would work with a Microgroove Plus with the the settings 0.2Vm gain and 100ohm loading.
Thanks
Peter

Hi
Well I have done the google search I should have done in the first place. Found this on Analogue Addict Linn LP12 FAQ:
Linn Troika; Loading 10ohms, nominal 150ohms 560 ohms recommended.
Output 100 micro volts
Well I can't say that I understand all that (another search!!) but it does seem that the Tom Evans Microgroove I'm looking at won't work with my Troika.

you amp has a moving magnet cartridge input which is higher than the moving coil of your troika , you will hear a sound about as loud as a mosquito in a box:D

You could always have the TE Micro adjusted to suit, no idea what the cost is for this but would be interested to know as I too have one set up for a MM cartridge.
I just had my TE microgroove+ adjusted a few weeks ago. It cost £50 and was returned to me in the quoted two weeks.

FYI - Troika has an internal coil impedance of 4 ohms.
100 ohms should be OK for the Troika (100 >> internal coils) but not ideal. Ideally loading should be 560 ohms in parallel with 5.6nF capacitance IIRC.
However, the 200 uV sensitivity of the Groove means that the 100uV from the Troika is a little low. You'll probably get too little level and noise.

Hi all,
My Troika was sounding a little bright and less punchy than I like at 560 ohms after running in (after retipping) so I took my pre-amp down to 150 Ohms still in parallel with 1 nF. The top is now in better harmony with the rest and the bass has more slam and punch and that physical fealing of it hitting you in the chest when cranked up a little.
I guess loading depends a lot on the MC-pre also. I believe some amps deliberately roll off the frequency extremes a little which might match the Troika at 560 ohms. On my pre-amp however it was too bright at 560 Ohms.
Regards,
Rolf
