Anyone had Slimserver up and running succesfully on vista yet?

I've read many reports of it being problematic.

I've also read a supposed solution (adding slim.exe to the firewall and installing it in a certain way), but people are still having problems it would seem.

So I'm just wondering if anyone here has tried it?

Nope! Vista is still 12 months away as far as I'm concerned.

From what I've heard about it so far, I'll be switching to Linux anyway.

BTW, surely all firewalls have to be configured to allow slim traffic?

Yup, runs fine.

Can anyone advise on the present state of play with regards to Vista and Slimserver?
A friend of mine has just bought a new PC with Vista pre-installed, and an SB3. He's apparently having "a spot of bother".

Any thoughts?

I suggest a trawl through this thread:

Alternatively, describe the problem?

Not to highjack, but is Vista a worthwile upgrade from XP? Or are we all still waiting for Microsofts dreaded "new OP blues" to run dry?

Yes, runs fine - no problems. The issues with Slimserver in my experience (running on XP and on Vista platforms) are more to do with firewalls and network protection as opposed to the OS itself.

If you're running XP and happy with it - stick with it. Vista is littered with small bugs, irks and annoyances which *should* be fixed when Service Pack 1 (SP1) comes out in a few weeks time. Even so, I'd wait to hear if the 'patched' version of Vista is any better!

Oh, I also had problems with Slim Server running on Vista but as mentioned, it was promiarily the firewall in Vista that was causing the problem... along with a rather stubborn copy of McAfee which claimed to have completely uninstalled yet still had a number of services still loading\running in the background!

:D

If you scroll back a short way to the second post of this thread, you will see that on February 22nd last year I said this:

Looks like I was right :D

We bears know these things ;)

It seems to be in beta (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=529D992A-D69E-4C73-9213-7A7F3852C0CA&displaylang=en) now

I'm running both XP and Vista, and have no problems with either. Vista is, in my experience, faster at re-scanning the library, loading large playlists and completing searches. I just had to tell the firewall to allow it (Slimserver) access. I'm currently using SqueezeCenter.
