View Full Version : Achtung Baby - my CDP hates it...
Sid and Coke 26-02-07, 02:51 AM My CD player (Tascam CD-RW 900 ) was purchased new in Nov/Dec and has probably not played more than about 20 or 30 CD's in total since purhase, probably total of about 3 weeks of use so far.
The transport is a little noisy when it is first reading the TOC , etc, but then settles down to normal near silent play, I can't hear anything at all from my normal listening position even if i mute the amp.
Yesterday it went mental though, I fancied listening to a bit of U2, for the first time in ages. I popped Achtung Baby in and settled back with the remote. It sounded like something was jammed in the mechanism, a really loud vibrating sound , similar to what a computer HDD makes when it is doing stuff. It couldn't get rid of it, although the music sounded just fine with no problems. I skipped through the tracks and the sound changed frequency and charcter until i got to track 5 when it disappeared completely. I have not noticed this on any other CD's so far.
I'm a bit pissed off at the mo, until this happened i was reflectig on how happy i was with the new CDP, both from a sound quality and functionality point of view.
Any idea what might be happening. The U2 CD does have a few minor marks and scratches on it, however I probably have worse ones ....
spet0114 26-02-07, 03:05 AM Maybe you need a CD lathe to remove the 'edge' effects from the CD?
It's possibly a very slightly flawed cd pressing (opinions re: content aside) - I have a couple like that. Solution is to burn a copy onto CDR and use that. Can't really explain why it's more noticeable on some cd players than others though...

Go to the top of the class JTC, the CD-R copy works perfectly and the transport is silent.
I'm not in the mood for listening to it now though, maybe I'll try again in another 2 or 3 years time :)

It probably might help, but i won't be buying one, especially as copying onto a cheapo Tesco CD-R has sorted out my problem.
rubaiyat_23 26-02-07, 09:44 AM Was it an enhanced CD?
Machine Man 26-02-07, 01:42 PM Probably an off centre hole causing the laser mech to oscillate to and fro making a rattling sound.
spet0114 26-02-07, 01:51 PM Hi Sid,
Actually, my comment was a bit of a joke. 'Edge' effects, U2, geddit?
Cheers!
Adrian
Personally, I think that by refusing to play this album, your CD player is simply showing it has good musical taste!
I'll get my coat.
technobear 26-02-07, 02:04 PM Unbalanced CD is my guess too. Off-centre hole most likely - doesn't have to be out by much. The lathe would probably fix it.

I'll join you.
robert_cyrus 30-01-08, 01:42 PM I have a couple of cds where it's very slightly dished, so it rubs on the internals of the cd mech. Happened with the Cyrus cd player, not with the Arcam, actually havent tried the offending discs in the Moon yet. Burning to cdr was the solution.
1964meb 06-02-10, 09:33 AM Is this a symptom of something quite different?? Specifically that U2 albums just so poorly produced!
The joshua tree - a total classic - sounds as if a newspaper has been placed in front of the speakers. WHY???? That is so lame when compared to so many others from then (1987), 30 years before and present day.
It's not as if they can't afford good production!!!!!!!!!!!!
Or is it just me being picky??

no, you are deaf. sounds great on my system. I only have the original vinyl, mind you. it'll be that interconnect/twenty levels of mana/power source/MP3 that's the trouble...

I get this with the Shanling on some CD's ..like above I just copy the offenders..more noticeable on the Shanling due to the drive mech being so exposed n all..
