View Full Version : What's new on vinyl...

Now that my LP12 is only awaiting its new cartridge, I'll soon be able to hear my stash of newly acquired vinyl (both s/h and new) and I plan to basically avoid the purchase of new cds unless no vinyl can be found.

However, I find from time to time that it's tricky to keep on top of who is releasing stuff on vinyl - both in a new release and a re-release sense. I wondered if it might be worthwhile to have a topic in which people can add details of any new vinyl releases they've acquired, what you think of it, and where the rest of us can get it. Maybe this concerted effort will open up new avenues of musical pleasures for the rest of us...

I'd start, but until I get my upgraded-and-breathed-upon deck I won't be able to comment on how good the music and/or pressings are/is.

So long as we keep all hifi talk clear of this topic, I'll add some of the newly acquired vinyl (new or re-release, but crucially unplayed) that I can think of, and where it came from:

DSOTM 30th Anniversary =- replaces my 1997 box-set 180g version, which got warped when I left it in the sun. Must look for a first pressing sometime. Amazon.co.uk

The Old Kit Bag =- Richard Thompson's latest. On order at Amazon.co.uk. If it's anything like the Bong Load pressing of Mock Tudor then it's worth paying the extra, even if I already have the CD.

Wicker Man (OST) =- A simply vinyl purchase, 'cause I always loved the music in the film but I've never seen an original vinyl copy. 180g audiophool, but I got it in the sale.

Safe as Milk =- Again, a SV copy, but one of their 125 series, 'cause it was cheap.

Is a woman/Nixon =- both on order, try www.cdzone.co.uk - despite the name, there seems to be a fair bit of vinyl floating around.

That'll do for now. I've also recently acquired a lot of DG pressings in what appears to be mint- condition, and a few 60s Deccas. Also 8:30 by Weather Report, a couple of Miles' LPs (early pressings, not mono sadly) and some other stuff. Also an accidental copy of the "Forbidden Planet" soundtrack, sent in error but told to have as a freebie (SV).

Is the Richard Thompson good? I saw the first 2 tracks of his set at Glastonbury - then fell asleep (much to my chagrin) due to a combination of heat stroke, overtiredness and being slightly tipy (the bar in Billy Bragg's set had run out of water....).

What I heard sounded effing amazing though...

The guys at Diverse (http://www.diversevinyl.com/htm/recent.php?sp=0&rs=50) are really helpful and friendly.

They have everything as soon as it's out and I believe Richard Thompsons most recent was released on vinyl via their label too.

Couldn't recommend them more highly. Even though they're costing me a fortune :-)

I have honestly no idea. If one were to fall my way for a sensible price I'd be very interested, but given its relative abundance as a commercial release, I think a first pressing must be cheaper than something a little more obscure. Perhaps that big book that dealers have at record fairs (anyone who's been to a decent fair will know the one I mean) will shed some light. I've been after an up-to-date copy of that for ages, does anyone know where to get a copy?

Anyway, as per first pressing - not bothered, I should have said "original pressing" - doesn't bother me, so long as it sounds good in both the original release mix sense and also in the quality of the pressing sense...

You're asking the wrong guy - I'm a big fan, having seen him six or seven times in the last five years or so. However, I will say that I don't yet have the vinyl, but the cd which I bought on the week of release initially struck me as inferior to his previous release "Mock Tudor" (also available on Bong Load as a double LP) but has since grown to oust MT in my opinion. It's a more musically diverse, far reaching album, a little less parochial and with an ethnic slant in places which really appeals. I'd rate it as 5/5, as it represents most of that which I really rate about Richard Thompson - superb guitar playing, intelligent yet not-up-his-own-arse songwriting, creative instrumentation and a really solid, listenable, musical core throughout the whole album.

Comments on the double LP (songs on it, mastering v. the cd release, pressing quality, etc.) will come once it arrives and once my increasingly-conspicuous-by-her-absence LP12 returns from her holiday in Montrose.

In the meantime, do yourself a favour and go and buy "The Old Kit Bag" - I guarantee you will enjoy it, given what you've said about what you heard at Glastonbury...

The Richard Thompson vinyl release in on two slabs of thick vinyl with a very nice gatefold sleeve, nice artwork and great recording quality and the music in not bad either. :D
