Dear Mr Ribee

After I have recovered from the high quality co-op red wine I have just consumed at the princely sum of 2.99 a bottle, I will post my modest speaker history. It has to be said that quantity will far outweigh quality.

Jonathan Ribee

Dear Mr Rodrat

I will alert pfm HQ to free up some server space in anticipation of your magnum opus and practice my Sid James impersonation with some key phrases such as "cor, look at the size of them honkers" and "now you don't get many of them to the pound nurse" in order to comment suitably whilst still awed at the size of it.

don't you find it curious that whenever a charlatan makes significant impact on a user (see dave in other threads, with other charlatan), we see stuff like this posted?

it's a shame you didn't have someone around to help you set up the mana correctly.

Hi Robert,

very long ago, you had some Bolivar thingies - we loved these and the bass was as good as the classic JBL's they were derived from - especially in the three way version (B 125's?)

I hope I've still got all those HiFi Choice compilation tests from this era in the loft.....

06-03-08, 11:35 PM
Does anyone old enough remember the Ferrograph S1 and S2? The S1 didn't get hugely well reviewed, but we had a special deal on the S2's and they were superb as I remember. BC1's took precedence for me, but the S2 (a medium sized "sort of" mini transmission line with B139 bass standing on a tripod stand with castors - oh the memories) sounded really good as I remember...

85 - Some speakers pulled from a skip outside a renovated hotel (I kid you not)
89 - Celestion DL8 - bought as a student on a budget
93 - Epos ES11

Tangent RS4...ultimately rewired with NACA 4 (I home demo'd Gale 401s, Linn Saras and Maggie SMGs and still couldn't find a speaker I preferred.
Original Kans....the sounded way worse than my Tangents and were returned.
Palantirs (a small 2-way speaker made in Miami)
Spica TC50s
Artemis Eos...the one with a faceted WATT-ish style and ceramic tweets. The very first pair made SN 001/002 bought from the designer
Sonus Faber Extremas (I would take them back today in a heartbeat..when passively bi-amped with a quartet of NAP 135s they did things like no other speaker).

PSB Summit 11s -- Bought when I was 16 after my first summer job; the rest of the system was to follow the next year. This was ultimate embodiment of a mullet system -- all speakers, no source or electronics (top that, Ian).

Szabo somethings -- Reluctantly realized that speakers need an amp and source, so I traded the Summit 11s for an entry-level system with these largely forgettable bookshelf speakers.

Cervin-Vega fuzzy DJ speakers with piezo tweeter -- Bought after my second summer job. Discovered high-efficiency/low fidelity; fell for the saleman's pitch: "These babies will blow the fuzz off your ass with half a watt of power!"
Turned out to be true -- was arse-fuzzless for a year.

PSB Passif II -- Longed for arse fuzz, so I traded the C-Ws for crappy, boomy/bloomy floor standers.

Castle somethings -- Brought Passif IIs into a hi-fi shop for comparison; saw them demolished by cheap bookshelf speakers from England.

Linn Index (original) -- First foray into flatness; an OK speaker if all you've had is crap before.

Linn Kans (original) -- Discovered that funky, fast bass is cool... if only Kans had some bass.

Quad ESL 57s -- Oh my. Life changed. So this is what hi-fi is about.

Linn Saras (original) -- Tried Saras on a whim; realized I missed phat bass; stupidly sold the 57s.

Linn Sara 9s -- Slightly less nasal version of above; in hindsight a pointless move.

Royd Sorcerers -- Fast and fun like Kans but with fuller bass and nicer mids; if only they better filled my current oddball-shaped listening room with music. I've had them since 1997, so they've lasted longer than anything else, but I long for big woofers in a big box.

Joe that's over ten years with the same speaker. Long term commitment like this to a speaker should be commended, I would expect nothing less from a man of your calibre. You make Bourney look like a speaker whore.

In recalling my list of shame, I was rather surprised I've had Sorcerers for that long as well, but the list of speakers before the Royds were during my single, childless days, when, despite being a student for most of it, I had money for hi-fi.

I don't want to derail this thread with tangents -- oh what the hell -- but everything I currently have has been in place for a decade or more, less the cartridge (2005), phono pre-amp (2004) and CD player (2000).

- First 'serious' HiFi speakers where Chartwell LS3/5a in 1978 after nearly buying JBL L100. Still have them.
- B&W DM6 that where my brothers, but I had them for a couple of years. Never really liked them.
- Rauna, by the Opus 3 people. They should stick to records!
- Linn Sara.
- Linn Sara 9. Liked them a lot.
- Naim SBL. Never got them to work properly, I think.
- von Schweikert VR 3. A round earthers dream with virtually no coloration. Boring as hell.
- Naim Intro II. Very colored, but at least not boring.
- Royd RR3. Very good, probably as good as small standmounts get.
- JBL L65. Big 1970's things with proper bass and very good PRaT.
- JBL 4331B. I'm stuck in the JBL swamp now. These are very big studio monitors and reproduces all music properly with scale, authority and delicacy.

I'm feeling quite modest in my speaker-buying habits now, thanks to some of the people on here.

1985-92 Mordaunt Short Pageant 2 (big 70s boxes, nicked from my Dad and spray painted metallic purple for that student grunge look)

1992 Ruark Icon (bookshelf speakers, bought with first paycheck from that Naim dealer near London Bridge, now doing duty as rear speakers in my home cinema)

1995ish Naim SBLs passive

1997ish Naim SBLs active

2002ish ditto plus REL Strata subwoofer

2004ish Shahinian Arcs (great speakers, will buy some again one day for a third system)

2004ish ATC SCM10A-2 (super little active monitors - still use them in second system)

2004ish ATC SCM50ASL (super larger active monitors)

My first pair of speakers were bought as secondhand when I was 15.
They were made by a company called "Clearwater".
They didn't sound half bad for bookshelfers on the end of my Revolver/LvX/K9 - Nad 3020a!

Never heard of Clearwater before or since...

Moved on to Linn Helix, then Mission 753 Freedoms.

1991-1993: Massive, friend's home made speakers that you could almost step inside, probably part horn-loaded- very sketchy memory of them- very black and a bit rough sounding.

Mordaunt short MS10i- part of starter system from Richer Sounds.
B&W 602 s2- Amazingly dynamic alongside a Kenwood 3020se amp and cheap Technics CD player!
Acoustic Energy AE509, Didn't stay for long but nice smell to the wood.
KEF Q3. Sublime connected to Nicam VCR but a bit anemic with bass driven music...BUT then:

1998- 2003:
JBL 4312 mk2 (90's reissue). Amazing dynamics! Didn't get on with slight mid-range colouration (nasality) but, unwisely, did not try alternate amplification before selling them.

swiftly replaced by

Kef Concerto 1 (current speakers, my missus wont let me changed them every couple of weeks like the rest of you, still for something very normally looking I think they sound damn good and for 150 new they were something of a steal)

Acoustic Research 3a worked best outdoors in trees apparently

The B&W's are DM3's

AR3a's set with maximum top and a decent set of stands were very good, but very different in character to the plastic coned stuff most of us listen to now. I loved the LST's and the smaller AR2ax. The "Improved" AR3a's were a bit livelier as I remember..

14-05-08, 04:03 PM
i. various bodged speakers when I couldn't afford to buy a pair - anything that reproduced music and that I could tweak
ii. KEF Celeste IV - great at beat and timing, gave me a lot of satisfaction over the years...
iii. I realised that the same speakers with spikes were about 200% better...
iv. I gave aforesaid speakers internal bracing so they could withstand a lot more whack and sounde better in the process - basically the panels didn't break up into vibration sub-modes after this
v. Rega Kytes - nice speakers but the timing was bloody awful so I never really like 'em
vi. Naim Credos - I couldn't afford SBLs - ok speakers. Not especially detailed or subtle but they did what they did nicely for their price level.
viii. Naim SBLs. There's so much controvosy about SBLs... they always brought a smile to my face. Set up well they are wonderful for their price level - great detail, great timing. No bass? well they may not go deep but the secret of a speaker is to do what it does well. What most people think is lack of bass in the SBL is actuallly lack of distortion and flab. Drawbacks? Yes - if they are not set up perfectly - really painstakingly, pain the @rse perfectly - then they are yawningly ordinary.

Wharfedale Dovedales, bought from the school woodwork teacher, beautifully made by him and in oversize cabinets. At 15 I thought they were great at the time but heard a pair recently and they were really shockingly bad...a terrible speaker!

Were your Wharfedales E series monitors?

I don't think so, but I can't actually recall - I got rid of them about 10 years ago. They had white (bextrene?) bass & mid drivers, and unusual flat, rectangular, foam-covered, treble drivers. The treble was the best thing about them (or at least, better than the metal domes that were common elesewhere). They did suffer from the slow bass (although lots of it!) common to many Wharfedale/Leak boxes.

23-05-08, 02:43 AM
I finally, finally got hold of a pair of IBL Mk IIs yesterday, but found them to be a little disappointing. The treble is nice&clear, but even my Kan IIs have more weight and bass to them!!?? Will I be stuck on Kans for ever?

Next up for a try: SBLs. Although I fear they won't cure either. Any opinions?

23-05-08, 02:52 AM

No I don't think they were E series either from your description. As I remember E series were huge and stuffed with loads of drivers, visible through a black metal mesh, all wrapped up in an eyecatching "real style" black ash vinylette veneered cabinet. They also had knobs for adjusting driver output levels.

I was immensely impressed at the age of 12 I guess, despite never hearing them. Apparently though they were harsh enough to strip paint.

They don't make 'em like that anymore.

Next up for a try: SBLs. Although I fear they won't cure either. Any opinions?

Have a look at Garyi's SBL set up guide on the Reference part of this site. They don't do slamming bass, kick drums don't really kick, but you will hear every bass note and precisely when it started and when it stopped, which is a lot more than you can say for most speakers you can buy for 450. The mid-range is to die for - liquid, clear, dynamic.

From the very beginning:

Wharfedale Denton XP2s  we all start somewhere I guess
Mission 700s - got a bit wearing after a while
KEF Coda 3s - great all rounder
Linn Index 1
Linn Index 2 - very under rated speaker IMHO
Linn Keilidhs
KEF Cresta 1
Linn Kan mk1 - absolutely no bass whatsoever
Naim SBLs

23-05-08, 06:17 AM
Wharfedale Linton 3XP - the midrange surrounds began to sag and cause the voice coil to buzz.
Mordaunt Short MS 25i -still got the mint cabinets/crossovers in the loft. I quite like these speakers.
Yamaha NS-300-Hugely powerful but useless with music.
B&W DM602 S3 on Atcama SL400's - The John Major of loudspeakers, they managed to make the bonzo dog doo-dah band sound boring.
Yamaha NS-1000M - my best so far though I was very impressed with a pair of RMS Revelation 1's I heard last week.

23-05-08, 06:50 AM
1. Mission something (NZ 1985 or so) - had the drivers reversed with cream facings - gave them to mother-in-law

2. Lambert something (NZ brand) - mid size floorstanders - sold them to get to UK

3. Cyrus 780 - Richer Sounds - not bad, can't remember what happened to them, but wish I had kept them

4. Acoustic Energy AE109 - still got them boxed in the cupboard - are they any good???

5. Jamo Cornet something - second hand from a Exchange & Mart store, Melbourne Australia - limited but did a good temporary job - still trying to give them away

6. B&W DM303 - got 'em for 40 off eBay - sound OK - still using them as I have no money to upgarde

Mission 716s

Lovely bookshelf speaker, couldn't moan especially at the age of twelve, really gave them a good thumping and are still used in a third system

Paradigm Monitor 7s

Not the best sounding speaker, but a huge improvement in the bass stakes, again only at the age of 14 felt that I had the worlds best speakers.

B & W CDM1

Now 16 I felt this was a Fantastic speaker, although I felt that the treble was not as exquisite as the Mission above, possibly being down to a metal dome tweeter, something I discovered to be the vain in my life, just far far to tinny.

Rega ELA mk1s ripe old age of 22 by now

Trully fantastic natural sound across the entire range. This pair are not original, they have a new version of the bass driver which is found on the current ELA. Some lack in the bass regions, but my next speaker will explain

Rega ELA mk1s aged 26 now (one of the first three pairs built by Roy Gandhi and Derek Frost)

Fully original with all drivers in excellent condition. Thought my first pair were good, but lacked bass, this pair on the other hand are even more amazing, they are producing amounts of bass that seem absolutely out of this world for such a small driver. Derek actually sold them to me a couple of months ago and had told me, thet they were origianlly running through some huge home made monoblocks rated at 365 wpc. These speakers simply, have given me hours and hours of enjoyment as should all good hifi. They are connected to a full exposure system, whcih seems to suit them perfectally.

Currently trying a pair of Cain & Cain Abby speakers on the second system, again a full exposure system. Wonderful on stringed instruments.

Not sure you'd like the Vienna's, as some I've heard are a bit "soft" in balance.

I love the Cremona series though. The magnificent finish and superbly judged sound quality goes some way to justifying the UK prices and the original floorstanding model gave a humble Naim pre and power (92/90 even without flatcap at the time - that came later) a glorious soundfield between and around the speakers I never thought it capable of....... Unmatched perhaps, but the client loved it and bought a pair...

IMHO I really do not think I have to change speakers for quite some time, the ELAs are just amazing, I can only state that this is because they were hand tweaked, as the 1st pair of ELAs I have, are absolutely no match to the originals from Derek Frost. A very happy purchase from Derek at only 75.

Heybrook HB1: second incarnation from the 90s, lovely fast efficient revealing dynamic musical speakers, if sometimes a bit spitty in the treble. Very well built. A bit big for my current lounge, sadly. Still have them.

Wharfedale Diamond 2: bought for very little just after I got the Heybrooks. Amazing lil things given their cheap tweeter and all, readily improved with a capacitor upgrade and internal bracing. A tad more polite and sat on compared to the Heybrooks (they'd benefit from a stronger amp), they still turn in a coherent, emotional performance, and are ideal for our small lounge.

There, my first PFM post :)

B&O something or other, circa 1971 about the size of B&W 601s
AR19 during university and a few years afterwards
Epos ES22 when it was time to get something decent
KLS9 (Hifi World design with thicker cabinet and Morel MDT30 tweeters - cheap and very good)
PMC AB2 (I'm pretty much done now)

I've still got the last three pairs although the ES22s aren't in use I can't bring myself to sell them

Epos ES 11. The first speakers that actually sounded like the instruments.
Linn Kieldhi ? The first buy influenced by five star reviews. Mistake 1.
Epos ES 14. Straight swap for the above. Music restored.
Epos ES 11 again. (The last recession forces downgrade of amps and speakers.)
Naim Credo. Liked these although a bit thin in my new big room. (The 'nice decade' begins)
Linn Isobarik. Never got these to work in spite of lots of up stream money influenced by dealer advice. Mistake 2 and 3.
Epos ES 14 again. Gave up on the Briks. Music restored.
Neat Vito Ultimatum. Finally completely satisfied. (The next recession looms)

The Dahlquists DQ10 were very similar in shape and size to the ELS 57s.

Cerwin Vega AT-100 (Party - horrible but fun)

Would like to combine the C7's and AT-100's so I'll probably go Tannoy like everyone else.

PMC AML1's now gone - replaced with Genelec 8050A monitors and 7270A sub.

Genelec 8050A monitors and 7270A sub.

How are they? I used to use the little monitors in the cast metal cabinet a lot which I thought were nice (a size or two down from yours).

EDIT: Possibly an older version of the 8030, before they brought the rounded cabs in.

Hi Anex,

A little history before I tell you what I like about the Gebelec's. I had a pair of PMC AML1's - absolutely amazing active monitors, did everything I wanted in my room. Then circumstances changed and I had to move my kit into a bigger room that had no acoustic room treatments. The PMC's lost all the bottom end bass - they were just lost in the room.

I researched subs for the PMC and found the PMC subs with Bryston PowerPacks and Bryston external crossover was the way to go, but far too expensive for me.

I played with a pair of Klein & Hummel O410 and they came close to what I was looking for and the guy who recommended I listen to them said I should try out the Genelec's.

I opted for the Genelec's as they are transparent and honest, nothing more or less! I also went for them so that I could use their loudspeaker management software and AutoCal measurement and analysis software to deal with some room issues.

22-12-08, 06:32 AM
Kewl. I've only heard Genelecs in treated rooms, but always liked what I heard, even in relatively large spaces. No real bass from the little ones of course, but what was there was very nice.

Main System Speakers - 1969-current

1969: Kef Cantors

1971: Kef Cadenzas

1993: Tannoy 613s

1995: Tannoy D700s

Initially, D700s were driven by Audiolab 8000A + 8000P (using 8000A as pre-amp). Burglars intervened and insurance payout enabled upgrade to Classe' pre/power combo (CP50+CA100).

Once again burglars paid a visit and current pre/power combo is Classe' CP-500 plus a pair of Jeff Rowland Model 201 monoblocks.

Have had lots of debates about the apparent overkill aspect of driving 93dB speakers (6ohm) with 250/500 watt (8/4ohm) monoblocks, but have found that the current combo blows away both previous setups. System sounds effortless, has great transient handling and plenty of dynamics/slam.

Next? Nothing I've heard since 1995 has made we want to part with the D700s - particularly since the arrival of the CP-500 / JR Model 201s.

Speakers '97 (when I left school!) to date...

1)Whatever came with my Sony minisystem, upgraded with...
2)Richer Sounds Gale minimonitors (still have 'em somewhere), plus some old...
3)Goodmans Minsters (I think) when I got my first separates (Richer's + oxfam) then aquired...(the Goodmans are now with my sister)
4)2 huge pairs of Wharfedale e-series things, that were going in the skip at my student union! Big, fun speakers, could be a bit ragged sounding, but I was happy till I was working and had some money to spend, so I gave them to a workmate and bought...
5)Spendor Preludes off ebay, nice, warm, bbc sounding, powered by Quad 34/306...zzzz. Until a dodgy ic between pre and power = blown tweeters. So whilst trying to find new tweets, I bought some...
6)Linn Saras "ooh, they look interesting" then found tweets for the Spendors, fixed them, tried them and thought "hmm, sound a bit boring compared to the linns". Passed them to my father, flogged the quad combo, bought Nap160/Nac32.5. Enjoyed...til I started thinking "I fancy some Isobariks" so from another pfm'er I bought...
7)Linn Isobarik PMS's (early '80s, but with late panelled stands and external passive x-overs) Great! Gradually added 2 more 160's, to tri-amp, then a Naxo for active. Lovely!
Recently added a Linn Centrik and put the Saras in as rears for AV, and that's me sorted for the foreseeable future...

Hi Jonathan,

Mike missed this one - and when rodrat gets here I want to see what happens when a single post is greater than the length of a page on a thread...

AR something
Mission 731i
Mission 760
Kef Q35
Celestion A3
Quad ESL "57"
Quad ESL 989
And some little Quad 11L for the office

Future: stacked 57s, 63s, 2905s - then maybe some really big stats. Stacked 989s???

For me:
Little Panasonic cubes - part of an all-in-one
Dynaco A35
Dahlquist DA-10
Dahlquist DQ-20
Magnepan 1.5
Magnepan 3.6

Future: ? Perhaps a "live" Heavenly choir? ;-}
