I have a record gap that needs filling. I've lots of stimulatingly cerebral and emotional music, but surprisingly little that I'd describe as having cockle warming powers.

By which I suppose I mean music that's warm, organic, colourful, atmospheric and enveloping, with a certain beauty and refinement to it. The sort of music that makes you want to curl up in it.

Off the top of my head I'd put these albums in that class

Kylie Minogue's - Kylie Monogue (a bit of a lost gem IMO, and the fantastic cover makes it a vinyl must have)
Susumu Yokota - Sakura
Shakti - anything from the live Remember Shakti box set

Please, no big-titted jazz chanteuses standing too close to the microphone!

TIA

Anything by Mazzy Star or their singer Hope Sandoval fits that bill perfectly.

Wouldn't 'sexy music' have to be under 45 mins long? ;)

Kit,

Kylie's eponymous album sexy and sensual? It's a gem but I'm not quite sure I'd describe it like that... This must also be one occasion when the CD's cover tramples on the LP. I bought the Limited Edition when it first came out; it has a holographic picture of her on the front :)

What kind of music is Susumu Yokota - Sakura?

I'm awaiting delivery of Hiromi - Another Mind, and if it's anything like her debut UK performance of the Brecon Jazz Festival it will be sexy, sensual and humorous :) She's a pianist with a great, no AMAZING, tour band consisting simply of drummer and bass guitarist. The trio improvise and play off one another in such a beguiling fashion.... Spell binding.

Dave

Must be the moans on the first track :) But I think its playful, atmospheric feel counts as sexy - a good, ayurally exciting pop confection.

Susumu Yokota Sakura is ambient music from Japan, the kind where you can't hear the computers. Warm, organic and earthy, with structure and hooks (if not exactly melodies). There's a tracked called Hissen or something on it which has about the coolest drum sound ever.

It's the record I always pick out of the collection when I want some sounds but can't decide what to put on. Susumu's best album though is The Boy and the Tree, a very mystical record put together painstaking care and exceptionally good taste (this is where most of this sort of music dies on its arse).

By the New Jersey Kings. Something about French female accents over cheesy funk beats...

...great album as well. Must listen to it real soon, it's been a while...

French you say?

Then how about La Revancha del Tango by Gotan Project. Tango with a modern french post-hip hop bent, and some of deepest bassline ever. Very moody, but alas you can tell it's been digitally fiddled about with in DJ fashion, so it feels a little stiff.

So are there any smouldering, more traditional tango albums I should pick up?

Hmm, sexy music. I'm tempted to say this...

(Whitehouse, "My Cock's on Fire")

...but that's just crude.

Margie Joseph, made a couple of albums for Stax/Volt, and Mavis Staples (of Staples Singers fame, many fine solo albums as well), sexiest voices ever, probably. Neither of them are French, however.

Birkin And Serge Gainsbourg - Je Taime... Moi Non Plus and from the same era, Max Romeo - Wet Dream, both banned by the BBC and therefore sold tons.

If Jazz Diva's are out.. ..try...

India Arie - Acoustic Soul (Motown)

Nice mix of upbeat and get down and dirty..

I got it on 2x 12", but must get it on CD as 'seduction music' is great, OK vinyl sounds better - but changing sides every 25 mins, especially with my "vinyl nerd routine" is definitely passionkiller stuff...

Kit,
Are talking about music to put a woman in the mood?

music that's warm, organic, colourful, atmospheric and enveloping, with a certain beauty and refinement to it. The sort of music that makes you want to curl up in it.

The best mood setting music is anything by Carla Bley. I personally like Heavy Heart and Night-glo the best.

One key factor; the songs should be instrumental. Men can get horny over any kind of music, but women are different; they have this knack for actually listening to the words. For example, rock music would never have lyrics if only guys listened to it. The words are there for the chicks. If you doubt this, look and see who goes to the john during a rock concert when a guitar solo or instrumental is playing!

This is very important to remember when trying to get skirts up and panties down. If you play a song with words, your woman will be more focused on singing along than what you're doing.

The Carla Bley records work, guaranteed. I'll even offer the Rob Holt guarantee. If any Carla Bley record doesn't get you laid, I'll buy it off you! (Unless you're an ugly-fu#k)

BTW, if you happen to be alone and the Carla records get you going, she's quite a looker on the record covers, so definitely get the LPs. She has wild, long, frizzy hair and big full lips and wears see through sweaters. Ooooh, aaaah.

I have a theory that the best "mood-setting" music (*almost) always involves the fret-less bass. Something about the sound of fingers sliding up and down a thick, long, hard shaft gets women in the mood.

After I stop playing Warren Zevon and Johnny Cash this weekend, I'll get back to you on more records.

Ron The Mon

*A record that works for me a lot is Horses And Trees by Ginger Baker which is mostly an African percussion record. I specifically remember one time while playing it a girlfriend (who I barely knew) pulled her pants down to show me she was wearing leopard pattern panties that really "matched" (her word) the music. What was funny about the whole thing was that when side one was over, she made me pull out to flip the record over.

A more obviously raunchy album than my earlier suggestions is Black Cherry by Goldfrapp.

It's a grinding electro follow up to the atmospheric soothe-fest that was Felt Mountain. Think machine rhythms, throbbing synths, achingly sinuous vocals and sparkling glam gloss.

Oh, and it was only £7 in the Virgin Megastore sale.

Ron, nice post, now everyone knows. The number of people who tell me that the sax is the sexiest instrument...

Your also spot on about the lyrics getting in the way, as well.

(Carla Bley)'s 65 years old!!!!

Not on the record jackets. Do you look at photos of Candy Loving from the 70s and 80s and think the same thing?

BTW, last year I saw Carole King live and she looked damn good! I'd have no problem dating her and she's just as old.

I forgot Bill Laswell's Santana "reconstruction" Divine Light. Tha's a very appropriate album. Swooning strings, rippling harp, squealing guitars and plenty of bongo bashing.

Another pretty good'un I'd forgotten about is Blasters of the Universe by Bootsie Collins. Relentlessy looped driving beats and bass/synth bass riffs (and Bootsie knows good bass riffs), modestly embellished with laid back, hazy vocals and instrumentation. The title track has the late and very great Eddie Hazel jamming away to himself with his wah wah to righteous effect. One of those albums you can kind of melt into. Mmmm :)
