What a splendid demolition. Nice to see Louis Armstrong being defended so passionately against poodle haired Kenny.

There's quite a nice hatchet job by Keith Jarrett on Wynton Marsalis on the same site:

I particularly like the last sentence: "He's jazzy the same way someone who drives a BMW is sporty."

But, but... are they *allowed* to put such things on a website? I'd have thought that they're on legally very iffy ground.

Much as I dislike the Kenny G sound and ideology, I'm not sure that I completely agree with one musician being so outwardly acidic to another*. Sure, perhaps he has desecrated what is considered sacred, but then he isn't alone. Look at the wheens of so-called artistes ripping off what has gone before. Is that any better or worse? It's a debatable call, but surely by rising to the bait, Metheny has portrayed himself in a catty, bitchy manner, and I have lost some respect for him because of it...

* whether Kenny G fits into the phylum 'musician' depends on your viewpoint. I say 'aye', based on the premise that (a) he can be a bad instrumentalist, bad composer, bad performer but still, technically, a musician, and (b) if we look at it objectively, I consider myself a musician but Kenny G has sold infinitely more records, cds, videos and played to infinitely more people than I ever have. DOes that make him a superior musician - not at all, but it does mean that any criticism I could levy at him would be tempered with the possibility of being 'sour grapes' at his success. The same is true of Metheny, who probably has sold less than 1% of the Kenny G figures in a career spanning back into the early seventies.

Top Cat,
This thread was designed to flush out the Kenny G fans at pfm. You've been outed. Wuss.
It's no wonder you have such trouble buying hi-fi; trying to follow the tune while listening to Kenny G, Yanni, and Kitaro is impossible as they are all always out of tune and time.

And what's with Bob Scott on your AC/DC thread? At first I thought it a typo, but now it makes sense; A Kenny G fan like yourself wouldn't know his nick-name was Bon The Mon.

Kenny G is ok, but he's no Ray Lynch.:D

Kasper,
I'm not up on lame music, so had to do a search to find out who Ray Lynch is. After visiting his website, I guess he's worse than the "G"-man? His approach to selling direct kind of reminds me of Slim Whitman and his claim to being the biggest selling artist of the '70s.

Ron,

Yes, Ray Lynch's particular brand of "meditative, soothing music" reflects "the intelligence of the heart", so he says. Absolute aural anesthesia. The flat-earth system has not yet been built that could make this stuff interesting.

Just my opinion, of course. I'm sure he's a fine fellow.

Ah, a hifi reference in the music room. Begone, imposter, the power of music compels you! The power of music compels you! The power of...

Anyway, trouble buying hifi? Nah, that's the easy bit. It's the paying for it bit I have trouble with...

Saying that, I've just as good as sold my old turntable so maybe I can afford that Helikon after all...

Back to music...

Pat Metheny should sort his own music out before slagging off our Kenny.
My cat could make a nicer noise than PM....;)
