ps: now if only my speakers could radiate a bit of heat it would be like xmas coming early to me.
Blurboy 29-11-09, 09:07 AM Used a Krell KSA class A amp many years ago and boy did that put some heat out. Only problem was I had it during the summer!
boog,
Unless your speakers are 100% efficient -- and they're not -- they are radiating a lot of heat.

Some years ago i was using Musical Fidelity Class A monoblocks (Ma-50?). They sounded wonderfull, but after VERY hot summer (2003?) i sold them. In august it was nearly impossible to hear music longer than one hour, the room was getting so hot ;)
Martin Colloms 29-11-09, 10:36 AM Enjoying Krell Evo 402 at present , nice and warm when played loud!

Most of continental Europe - the heat wave was responsible for the premature deaths of a large number of elderly people. That summer I got severely sunburnt in Finland of all unlikely places.
stevec67 29-11-09, 11:37 AM 2003 was a viciously hot summer. It was red hot in UK and it was my first summer inFrance. There were indeed pensioners dying, I wasn't far off. For 2 months the heat was crushing, it's the only time in my life I've lost entire weekends because it was too hot. Too hot to go outside, eat, cook, get in a car (forget it) and belive me after a week in a no-aircon office at 30C (40 outside) you've had enough. People don't believe this but it's true, absolutely evereyone breathed a sigh of relief when daytime temps sank to high 20s!

When I was last looking at amps for an upgrade I dismissed Class A operation for exactly that reason. My lounge does get very warm in summer. Dismissed tubes because the amp and speakers also provide sound for my TV and given stereo or TV is normally on if I'm in the house I decided I couldn't be doing with replacing glass bottles at the rate indicated by the manuals.
I dont remember 2003 being that hot in London , a heatwave in the UK is a relative term.
then again, I dont remember 2003 at all.
Joelsim 29-11-09, 04:50 PM If you want heat then just charge a MacBook whilst listening to music.
RichardMoore 29-11-09, 10:41 PM Veering OT, I know but it was very hot in London in 2003 - went to see Fulham vs. Mallorca at a friendly on the hottest day in Aug - 99.5F (just didn't quite make 100). Not pleasant. Don't think my Naim ads added much to the heat, thankfully.
thats it, now im truly fecked , caught a cold over the last 24hrs, thats me out of action, oooh, at least 1 month Id say, probably more.....
Im almost dead now, please god make it happen....
Cram yourself full of over-the-counter cold pills and chicken noodle soup...and sweat it out. I hate the damn things.
get better...
dave
thanks v. much, appreciate it, I also feel ill just at the thought of them, and check this out, I went out this morning to buy some zinc tablets ( hope its good quality zinc and not just the stuff you get free with , err, medicine player, ahem ) and some lucozade
about 30 mins out
pesking courier left a card
no longer funny, sods law an all, but how is it they always come when I pop out for a while ? i mean at least 50% of the time this happens, considering Im out for 30min this is an amazing statistic
how how how ? i really wanna know
ClaraBannister 30-11-09, 06:55 AM They park up and read the Sun until they see you leave. Then they pop the card through.
LOL...the same thing happens here as well. Our cable TV company will only tell you the tech will arrive between 8AM and 5PM. Everytime, without fail, I leave for ten minutes and there's a "sorry we missed you" tag on the front door.
amazing !
how on earth is it possible ?
its quite worrying thinking about it, are there some evil forces at work ?
It's a conspiracy for sure;-)
ClaraBannister 30-11-09, 07:12 AM The Greeks in classical antiquity believed that the gods liked to amuse themselves by frustrating the endeavours of mortal men. I believe there may be some truth in it. You can be driving along a country road miles from anywhere, and a tractor will pull out and sit in front of you for miles when it's too dangerous to overtake. Had you been five seconds further along the road (maybe taken less time to negotiate a junction earlier in the journey), you would have passed the side road before the tractor got there. It's hard to believe that there isn't some intelligence behind such coincidences.

Either the Greek gods are havin' a larf at your expense or the law of selective memory is operating.

Valve amps are to hi-fi what Agas are to cookers.
Nic P
P.S. I love mine.

They take ages to warm up properly, break down when it's most inconvenient, and cost a fortune to repair.

Not my Radford STA25 III, over 35 years I've had it (not new when I bought it either). Wonderful sound, never needed any service or repair.

the aga or the amp Nic ?!
there is a certain feel to valve amps, the glowing tubes, the warm up time, the size and look of them, they look and feel organic compared to a tranny amp where u just press the on button on a black box
love mine also

keep away from chinese tubes and u should be fine, using russian eletro harmonix for the last 7 years , same set of tunes, no problems, previous oem russian filth shorted and blew the amp many years ago. had it repaired still going strong
