There's been this spider, going to call it B.S for Big Spider, knocking about under the window ledge, outside at the back of the house.

I went outside (didn't see cooky) earlier and spider B.S had been joined on its web by another smaller spider. Let's caller this spider L.S for Little Spider. I'm presuming that one of the spiders was a woman, and the other a man. It's hard to tell which one played which role.

So L.S moved to about 4 inches of B.S. B.S was lying upside down with its legs pointing upwards. L.S was also lying upside down. L.S then proceeded to flick its front legs in some weird pattern, a bit like Morse Code. This went on for a few minutes until B.S responded with some of its own leg flicking courtship.

L.S then moves closer to B.S whilst maintaining L.G.C (leg flicking courtship). Bit more dilly-dallying and then L.S tries to 'get on' B.S. B.S didn't seem to want L.S to get on right away, but L.S persisted and eventually B.S said cum on in.

At this point L.S flicked its abdomen / back end at the same area on B.S. Probably did this around 8 times. Then L.S runs up the web to the window ledge. Has a quick fumble around and then goes back down and proceeds to perform the whole performance again. This went on time after time, I watched them for about 50 minutes.

My Dad rang up and said it was rather voyeuristic, so I stopped. I've just been outside and they're still at it, horny bastards.

What I can't figure out is why they have to go through all that courtship over and over again. Doesn't B.S get a bit bored of the same old lines that L.S is spinning? (no pun intended) Maybe L.S has many different lines.

Has anyone else ever witnessed this act of love between two spiders?

My guess is that BS is the girly spider. She lines up a few eggs in the ovipositor, then winks at LS. He stops talking to his mates for a bit, puts his lager down, and gives her what she wants.

She then trots off, lays the fertilised eggs, and pausing only to do a spot of shopping and talk about the soaps for a while, lines up a few more eggs and says "your lucky day, sunshine" again.;)

If he's especially unlucky she may consummate the relationship by biting his head off and eating him so she has the strength to line up a few more eggs and get a proper man in.:cool:

L.S is now hanging back, about 6 inches away. B.S is taking it easy in the same place its always been. No movement from either spider.

I am no expert on spider mating but from the photo I can tell that those are a type of common UK house spider that likes to drink from human eyes while we sleep.

So you might want to warn your wife and/or children so that if they should awake and find a spider slurping at their tear ducts, they won't be too alarmed.

Just been to check on the happy couple. L.S is doing nothing, but still there. B.S hasn't moved for hours. I've rang Bill Oddie, he wasn't buying in to the concept I've come up with. He said Spider Watch could be quite boring.
