DIY streamer/HTPC project

Right, just starting to put together the parts for this, plan is for it to replace my netbook (used for music/internet radio) and my ps3 (bluray/dvd/streaming films from network.. Dont play games on it)

My requirements...
* It must be SILENT, so no moving parts (fans/hdds) - Only exception will be the blu-ray drive.
* Connect via HDMI to the tv
* Powerful enough to cope with 1080p content
* Very quick to boot
* For music/radio duties - Must be controllable WITHOUT having to switch the tv on.
* It must look right

Done lots of reading and have settled on an AMD fusion MINI-ITX board, specifically this one:
http://uk.asus.com/Motherboards/AMD_...E35M1I_DELUXE/

£130

Case I have chosen:

Streacom F1c

This is 19cm x 19cm x 7.5cm high... So tiny!
£75

Hard drive:
32gb corsair SSD (that I have spare)

Slot load Blu-ray drive:
Sony BC-5640H-03 Slim BD Combo Slot Loading Internal Drive - £70

8gb of DDR3 ram (as its so cheap) - £22

Pico PSU

Going to start out with OpenELEC as my operating system. Chosen as its very light weight, free and on first read does everything I want.... Might move to Windows 7 if I cant get it to do everything I want (I have a spare licence anyway so still zero cost).

Will update this as parts arrive/as I start building it with pictures and details of the build, and of the software install/addons/configuration etc to make it as easy as possible for someone else to clone my build.

------------------- UPDATE - PSU calculations

Most of these numbers can be found on the manufacturer pages.

Power requirements (load):
Motherboard - 17-25 W
2x4gb ddr3 - 3.24 W
Corsair SSD - 2 W
Sony Blu-Ray drive - ??? (cant find figures atm)

Hi Sam nice project, ASUS mobos are the best IMO, try and integrate a Xonar essence stx sound card into it as well .
Modu shop also do a nice case http://www.modushop.biz/ecommerce/cat193_l2.php?n=1#3

think windows 7 will be the biggest problem, if you can get everything to work with Linux that would be better.
Until recently I was using the excellent Asrock 330 and a wireless keybord with mousepad, my Iphone app also worked with Itunes
http://www.asrock.com/nettop/overvie...ion%20330ht-bd.

At Christmas I bought a Samsung smart TV, a Cambridge 751BD and a NAS drive which has now made my little HTPC redundant.

Will be plugged into my Mdac via USB for lossless audio duties, as well as audio via HDMI for those times when you want to watch something without using the hifi..

I have no problem with Linux, so openELec suits me... Worked in and with IT for many many years and am a fully signed up geek.

The plan is for this to be complete enough (along with screenshots etc) to help others get to the same position without too much hassle.

I'm thinking of fitting a bluray player to my linux box, any info you have collected? I'm thinking of playing and compatibility. I use xbmc also on occasion.

Does XBMC for Linux support Blu-ray or HD DVD playback with or without menus?
Yes, without menus. Dharma (10.0) includes support for playback of unencrypted Blu-ray directories when libbluray is installed. However, XBMC must be compiled from source. Installing from a repository like the Team-XBMC unstable ppa will not recognize whether libbluray is installed.
Currently, only the longest title is played from the Blu-ray directory, even on multi-video Blu-rays (e.g. TV shows). To play a Blu-ray directory, select the /BDMV/index.bdmv in the Blu-ray directory. If stacking is enabled, selecting the Blu-ray directory folder will start playback.

i've just cut and pasted this from an xbmc forum.

cheers,
mike

Its good, I did measure but the Mdac and the F1c together with a sensible gap between them is the same width as a standard hifi seperate... Build quality is good. I will be adding some sound deadening matt to parts of the case as it does 'ring' a little when the power button is used which I am never keen on. Lid sits inside the top (flush) and is help in place with magnets. Has a space on the left hand side of the front for an IR module (behind a smoked circle, barely visible).
IR module is £25 here: http://www.quietpc.com/gb-en-gbp/pro...st-ir-receiver

Just want the rest of the bits to arrive now!

Hi Sam,
Good interesting thread you have here. The case and mobo look very good, unfortunately from what I can see the case doesn't allow for use of the pcie slot, something I would want to do as I would want decent multichannel sound (multi channel hi res flacs to be precise) hence why using a dac isn't really an option. Not sure what res/channels the spdif does either. Do you know if the hdmi supports multi channel audio? The one in my laptop doesn't you see!

Cheers,

Tom

Thanks, I see people spending quite a lot on these sorts of things and you really dont have to, with a bit of know how its easy enough to put together something yourself. The hardest part is the software.. building pcs is EASY.. Getting the various bits of the software to behave exactly how I want is the harder bit as I am quite particular about how things work.

Not a clue on the multichannel side I am afraid, I am very definately a 2 speaker person so have done no research on it.
They do a whole range of cases, the F7c/F8c both offer a half height slot but are slightly larger.

Sam, I would agree an interesting thread. Are you able to help me with some of the blu- ray issues I raised above?

Cheers, Mike.

Not just yet... Once I have the bits to build this then I will do what I can to assist. Not looked at XBMC/OpenElec/Linux in a while so will need to do a bit of a refresher.
