Promos, new bands etc I’m pretty compulsive at picking up promos and stuff from acts I’ve never heard of, I just grab things I like the look of / the band name / instrument line up / cover art etc. Curiosity is a Very Good Thing, so here is a whole section for it. £2.50 each. Take a punt on something new! A The Alexandria Quartet – The Alexandria Quartet. Indie with hints of folk and a fair bit of orchestration.Angel Tech – Angel Tech. Kind of quirky, sparse, reflective indie, has slight feel of Granddaddy, Piano Magic etc, but sounds like neither. *Azita – How Will You. Female singer songwriter stuff with quirks, possibly a hint of Tori Amos about it, but I can't really remember what Tori Amos sounds like. B The Bambi Slam – “I’m Alive”. Beats, loops, fuzzy guitars, synths, angry voice, inverted commas. I suspect it’s one bloke in his bedroom. The Beauty Myth – The Britanee Tapes. 90s indie rock / power pop, louder than Coldplay, not as loud as Napalm Death, sounds like neither. 5 track mini-album. Bella – No One Will Know. Jump-suit clad Canadian synth-poppists, fem voc, think The Whip, but only to a degree. Big Bang – (Too) (Much) (Yang). Norwegian rock stuff of a fairly traditional nature. Birds Of Wales – Invisible Hands Music. No birds, just blokes playing slightly Manics-esq grungy indie rock. Blackchords – Blackchords. Complex cleverly arranged stuff that possibly straddles the divide between rock, indie and even prog. Black Helicopter – Invisible Jet. Indie rock perhaps in a Kings Of Leon vein. Black Madonnas – The Black Madonnas Have Stolen The Moon. One of those ‘core’ things, possibly thrash-grind-grunge-core, distinguishing feature is an almost Elvis-like voc. The Bloody Tentacles – The Bloody Tentacles. Female fronted nu-new-wave, possibly think The Whip, Forward Russia etc. The Bluefoot Project – Observations. Trip-hop / electronica with fem voc, falls somewhere between Alpha and Zero 7. Simon Bookish – Trainwreck / Raincheck. Classically trained sample ‘n’ loops ‘n’ poetry stuff, phenomenally pretentious, but not necessarily the worse for it. Broadcast 2000 – Building Blocks. 7 track mini-album from bedroom multi-instrumentalist Joe Steer on Gronland. Has a folky feel that hints at Sufjan Stevens etc. The Brothers – Extreme Gentlemen. Avant-poetry ‘n’ laptop ‘n’ rap, Asian. Andy Burrows – The Colour Of My Dreams. Solo outing by the drummer of Razorlight. C Chicken Feed – Inside The Machine. Melodic DIY Bedroom stuff. Closedown – Deflexion And Polarities. Good honest metal of the Bleeeeaaargghh variety, slip case. The Coast – Expatriate. Quite anthemic indie, hints of Keane, but not anything like as crap, some nice guitar too. Caspa Codina – Caspa Codina. Odd sample ‘n’ indie + funk + electronica type stuff, reminds me a bit of Prince, but it probably shouldn’t, slip case. Conner – Hello Graphic Missile. Indie with strong early 80s new-wave influence. Ross Copperman – Welcome To Reality. General Keane / Travis ballpark major label indie (Sony BMG). *Cosmic Love Child – We Are Medicine. Droney, eastern flavoured stoner trance dub, slip case. CoStar – Exit. Accessible hooky indie-rock. Crazy Arm – Cross Country. DIY / home recorded indie rock, live, lively, loud, slip-cover. D Deep Snapper – A Drowning Man Can Pull You Under. Noisy grungy indie, possible Sonic Youth influence. Dave Derby And The Norfolk Downs - Dave Derby And The Norfolk Downs. Hint of Americana, hint of Lou Reed. Neva Dinova – You May Already Be Dreaming. Americana lying anywhere between Calaxico and Nick Cave, who I do realise isn't American. Dolium – High Hounds On The Prowl. NuPunk, jerky, angular, hooky. Dualist – We Are You. Guitar driven indie, slight hint of very early Boy period U2. The Dudes – Brain, Heart, Guitar. “These songs may well be about you” they claim on the cover, so I guess you'll have to buy it to find out. They weren't about me. E Bruno E – Lovely Arthur. Funky nu-jazz stuff, but played rather than loop-driven. Electropolis – Electropolis. Electronically processed jazz fusion featuring several tracks of free improvisation. Emitrex – Metacomet. Indie, similar ballpark to Grandaddy, Eels etc. F Fear Of Night Fear Of Night. Retro 80s vocal synth-pop with hints of 90s house. Benjy Ferree – Leaving The Nest. Covers so many bases it’s really hard to pigeonhole; folk, indie, alt, Americana, DIY, grunge? All of them really. Sometimes all on the same song. Finn – The Best Low Priced Heartbreakers You Can Own. Sparse intimate mournful singer-songwriter stuff of a mainly acoustic nature. Josh Fix – Free At Last. Solo laptop / bedroom indie / folk / even pib-rock! Jacob Fletcher - All The Dead Roads To The Kingdom. Dour acoustic folk with occasional strings, Ltd Ed of 250 in nice card slip case. Flipron – Gravity Calling. Indie pop that somehow manages to bring to mind Blockheads, Sparks and Cockney Rebel without really sounding like any of them. *Fog In The Shell – Private South. Post rock of the quiet / noisy loud type, Ltd Ed of 500 copies. Friska Viljor – Tour De Hearts. Indie in the Starsailor, Coral etc general ballpark, occasionally veers into 3/4. The Furze – Subterranean Kicks. Punky indie popwer-pop of a suitably fuzzy nature. G Garageland – Last Exit To Garageland. Poppy grunge or grungy pop depending on one’s viewpoint. Gelka – Less Is More. Hungarian chill-out stuff, 50% Ibiza, 50% gardening program, slip case. Go:Audio – Made Up Stories. Guitar driven indie rock, it sounds familiar so I suspect it’s got play on MTV2 120 minutes, slip case. H Haale – No Ceiling. Female singer songwriter of a rather indie nature, i.e. nice fuzzed up guitars etc. Harrisons – No Fighting In The War Room. New-wave influenced indie-pop, pretty timeless stuff, could exist anywhere between 1977 and The Strokes. Heirloom – Without A Station. Alt.UKicana, private pressing. Her Next Friend – Disaster Casual. Fuzzy grungy power-pop trio of a guitar, bass & drums nature. Her Space Holiday – XOXO Panda And The New Kid Revival. A slight change of direction in that it’s far more acoustic than one would expect from HSH, promo CD in track-list stickered Wichita slip-case. *Viviane Houle – Treize. Somewhat bizarre free improv vocal stuff, hint of Laurie Anderson, though leaning a little to the Derek Bailey side of free-jazz. Humanzi –Tremors. Hard rocking indie on Fiction label (Cure), slip case. Hungover Stuntmen – Blame The BBC. Mod / Brit-Pop / Indie. I Island Line – Island Line. Tuneful light indie pop with a folk tinge, M/F vocals, harmonies, acoustic guitars etc. ISOR – The Zebra Theory. Fancy metal of some description, involves grunting and far more musicianship than is usually necessary, slip case. Brandi Itgray - Le Mutant. Piano electronica and vocal produced by Warp's Jimi Tenor. J Dave James Of Swindon – Willing And Able. Chaps, the people of Swindon are doers not plebs, this is why they have Porsche kettles, not ones from Asda…. AOR in a kind of Dire Straits does pop kind of way, slip case. Jepp – Jepp. 90s indie on Hut Records. My words here gives the 6th google hit for ‘Jepp+Hut’, so Hut blokes, your marketing and publicity efforts didn’t work. K Matt Kebbell – Skinny Dip. Acoustic folk, very sparse, minimal. Jo Kerr – Morning Haze. Bedroom indie / atmospheric singer songwriter stuff. If that's his real name he should kill his parents. TheKokoon – Berlin. Big stadium rock / prog stuff, not like Muse, but may appeal to likers of same, has possibly important lack of space after ‘The’ too for fans of punctuation. L The Library Is On Fire – Cassette. Reasonably raucous guitar indie. The Loungs – We Are The Champ. Quite literally everything, slip case. M Madding Crowd – Finding The I. Indie rock with a distinct 70s pub-rock feel, e.g. Dr. Feelgood, Ducks Deluxe etc. Tom Mansi & The Icebreakers – Love On The Rails. Hard to accurately pigeonhole, but hints of everything from rockabilly & Nick Cave to Steely Dan. Jesse McCartney – Departure. Melodic chart-compatible pop, slip case. Microphone Pet – Microphone Pet. Glitch ‘n’ loops ‘n’ rap stuff, nicely done. Midnight Mike - Midnight Karaoke. Amusing and very well executed internet karaoke project, includes drunken people who should maybe not sing singing things like United by Throbbing Gristle and Who Do You Love by Bo Diddley, recommended. Gerry Mitchell & Little Sparta – The Ragged Garden. I was going to say Americana, then the bloke started singing / speaking, very strong Scottish (Paisley??) accent, think Arab Strap goes folk / country. Monster Bobby – Gaps. Quirky DIY pop, i.e. pop but in a very DIY and quirky way. Seen Morley – Seen Morley. Female singer songwriter of a Later With Jools Holland compatible nature. Mooz – The Wheel That Squeaks The Loudest Is The One That Gets The Grease. Funky grooves with a jazzy trip-hop bent and fem vocal. Mountain Movers – We Walked In Hell And There Is Life After Death. Pop-rock, possibly Ben Folds Five ballpark, but I’ve completely forgotten what they sound like. Mowhawk Lodge – Wildfires. Indie/folk/Americana area stuff, think Tapes & Tapes, Giant Sand etc. Mustangs And Madras - La Lechuza. NuPunk, perhaps in the way ¡Forward Russia! are, if of course they are. My Device – Jumbo Fiasco. Melodic-indie with thrash tendencies, aftertaste / belch of RHCP, promo CDR in slip-case (2 available). My Drug hell – This is… Indie three piece. My Juliette – Crying Ocean. First track: reggae, second: 80s indie, third: 90s post-indie, fourth? You decide. N Narayan – A King Declares Strength. A bit of everything here, rock, synth-pop, ambience, but the rock wins. Neve Dinova – You May Already Be Dreaming. Americana / alt.country, will appeal to those who appreciate Will Oldham, Palace Music, Silver Jews etc. New Idea Society – The World Is Bright And Lonely. DIY / bedroom-indie singer-songwriter with quirks. Neurosonic – Drama Queen. Another of those fancy nu-metal / goth type things. Nineteen Ninety Seven – On the Run. “The sonic equivalent to a wide-eyed romp through a rural field on a sunny day” Spin / “Bright beautiful and utterly endearing” Rock Sound. “Light boy girl guitar indie of a melodic nature, CDR in slip case” Me. O One Day International – Blackbird. Lush, orchestrated slightly folky indie from Ireland, quite festival-compatible. The Organ Beats – Sleep When We Are Dead. Fem fronted indie, slightly shoegazery, hint of Blonde Redhead. P Pacific Ocean Fire – Strangers And Deranged Patients. Americana, hints of Giant Sand. *Parov Stelar – Shine. Electronica trip-hop nu-jazz type stuff with assortment of guest vocal. The Pavillionairs – Acoustic Playground. Very competent instrumental acoustic guitar trio, musically somewhere between Renborn & Jansch and Kings Of Convenience. Beautifully recorded too. Plastic Toys – For Tonight Only. Power-pop / non-heavy metal / electro-rock / slightly 80s but (hopefully) without poodle hair ‘n’ spandex, own label promo in slip-case. Poni Hoax – Images Of Sigrid. Synth-pop of a rather 80s retro nature. Preserves – How Excellent And Civilised Are We. Large scale festival band stuff, Jools Holland would love them. Puggy – Dubois Died Today. Tight quirky indie from, I think, Brussels, think one part Deus, one part Beefheart, one part rather ordinary. Joe Purdy – Take My Blanket And Go. Dylanesque alt.country, slip-case. Q R Rairbirds – 1. Large ensemble combining electronica and vocal with the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra on One Little Indian. The Rank Deluxe – The Rank Deluxe. Tight choppy indie-pop with a cockney ska element, reminds me a bit of The Pop Rivets, but that probably won’t help much. Raw Novembre – My Bones. Rock - one of those ‘types’ of metal. Which type? You decide. Ray – Death In Fiction. Modern guitar indie, tuneful, anthemic well crafted songs with good hooks: “Sublimely melodic” says The Guardian, I can see hints of Television, but only hints. *Realistic Crew – Overcome. Ambient glitchy electronica with occasional vocal on Germany's respected Kitty-Yo label, promo CDR with slip-case. The Recovery – The Recovery. Indie of the large guitar and odd voice variety. I might even have heard of them. Kai Reiner – Kai Reiner. Jangly guitar indie of a somewhat 80s nature. The Research – The Old Terminal. Guitar indie with a nice light summery DIY feel and melodic flair, slip case. Rises – Highrise, 3 track promo single, post-rock-ish indie, plain slip case £1.00. Rosie And The Goldbug – The Album. Female fronted power-pop. Royal Treatment Plant – Hope Is Not Enough. Female fronted power-pop with a punky edge and appropriate analogue bleepage. The Royal We – The Royal We. Fem DIY / lo-fi stuff, track 2 is a bit of a hit on 120 Minutes (slip Case). Rushing With Apathy – The Deaf Leading The Blind. One of those modern metal type things, goes widdly, widdly, widdly, but not in a pointless poodle-rock way, bit grungy at times too. S Sack – You Are What You Eat. Grunge / power pop of a fairly 80s Seattle feel. Sam Kills Two – Sam Kills Two. Kind of folky indie with quirks on the ever wonderful Rocket Girl label. Jon Scott – Flow Like A River. Soul with a rather mid-70s feel. Shaughnessy – Big Wide World. Traditional and rather timeless rock; not indie, not metal, not hard, but that stuff that's left. Sherwood – A Different Light. Melodic guitar based on MySpace Records. Yes, there is such a thing. Shin Jin Rui – Zutiqua. Low-fi indie rock. John Shipe – Yellow House. Americana with a real indie-country feel, quirky and refreshingly home-brew. Sienna – Essence. Vocal house / electronica with a cool slightly lounge-core feel. Silt – Cat’s Peak. Kind of alt.folk / country from Toronto, but way wider than that sounds. Quiet, introverted, close. The drummer can apparently play bass and drums at the same time. Singapore Sling – Perversity, Desperation And Death. Kind of Cramps-ish with a bit of Suicide thrown in. Slipstream – Mantra. Spiritualized spin-off, the promo-sticker claims 'Kosmiche-pop', but I can't see it to be honest – this is light and tuneful indie. Smash – Icon. Grungy indie stuff. Smother – Great White Hoax. Nu-grunge-power-trio. Small Sins – Small Sins. Electro pop but not obviously 80s in influence, slip case. Sound Team – “Movie Monster”. They could have rearranged the title into a Can album. They didn’t. It’s a bit indie, a bit electronic, a bit stadium rock – imagine if Reel To Reel period Simple Minds went stadium, not the later band, slip case. Speaker People – Parallel World. Vocal dance / house, 909 much in evidence. Spektrum – Fun At The Gymkhana Club. Electro pop a little in the Peaches vein, slip case. Spider Rockets – Ever After. Female fronted indie metal. Sportsday Megaphone – So Many Colours / So Little Time. Electronica, more synth-pop meets computer game than dance, has sporadic vocals, and some degree of indie feel, slip-case. Stinkmitt – The Red Album. Canadian F/F/M white rap trio, has a slight stink of Peaches. StonySleep – Music For Chamelions. Isn’t that a Gary Newman song / Truman Capote book? Anyway this is grungy power-pop indie stuff, not a Polymoog or dog-eared page in sight. Stuffy/The Fuses – Angels Are Ace. Indie / new-wave, hints of wire at times. Subaqwa – Chalk Circle. Guitar indie, Sonic Youth at their poppiest / lightest. Subtle – Exiting Arm. Slightly introspective indietronica (I suspect I’ve just made that genre up), vocally it reminds me of Fields a little, though musically it’s a whole other thing. Subvert – Assisted Suicide. Does what it says. Summer One – The Regional Variations. Arts Council funded Scottish synth pop. Surrounded – The Nautilus Years. Sweedish post/indie stuff, think Granddaddy, Sufjan etc. Richie Syrett – Commit No Nuisance. Singer songwriter stuff, slightly mournful, looks to be self-produced/released. T Tacticians – Some Kind Of Urban Fulfillment. Guitar based indie, rhymes James Dean with Vaseline. Tahiti 80 – Puzzle. Think Air, but in an indie context, i.e. without the retro synths etc, has similar feel. Test Tube Rhino – Test Tube Rhino. At times, metal guitar, at times acoustic, keyboards, drum loops, an odd instrumental fusion of stuff, lovely envelope sleeve packaging. Tin Star – Spectralist. Odd-ball fusion of traditional songwriting, electric beats and everything from dub to chart pop, almost certainly made at home. To Arms Etc – Corner Games. Not too easy to get a handle on this one... kind of indie, but not landfill indie, has some originality for sure. Has a piano too. Chrystina Tomlin – Bitter Twisted Wrong. Electric singer songwriter stuff in a somewhat Alanis Morrisette vein. Luke Toms – The Forever House. Orchestrated melodic singer-songwriter stuff almost in the Elton ballpark, and I don’t mean that as an insult at all, slip case. Tree By Leaf – There Is A vine. Folky Americana type stuff, probably Christian in orientation, but certainly not ‘Christian rock’ as that is usually a dreadful thing. U UPD – Ultimate Power Duo. It appears to require three people for a power duo these days, anyway, that’s what you get, full ahead grungyness. Ursula Points – Light Up A Galaxy. Nicely executed layered guitar post-rock. V Vanilla Swingers – Vs. Piano driven restrained slightly folky-indie stuff, M/F duo. Mia Vigar – True Adventures Happen Inside Your Head. Wonderfully quirky fem voc driven stuff, comparisons would be valid with Regina Spektor, and parts even sound a little Residents like, whilst I try not to be biased this one comes highly recommended. W Caroline Weeks – Songs For Edna. Stripped down acoustic folk of a slightly hippy / freak folk nature based on poems of Edna St Vincent Millay, may appeal if you like Joanna Newsome etc. The Weightlifters – The Last Of The Sunday Drivers. Guitar indie with hints of Lloyd Cole, Giant Sand, Velvets, something 70s in there too. Geoff Westen – Vidiots - Tune In. Synth based new-wave, very 1984. Whirlwind Heat - Do Rabbits Wonder. Tight punky indie with a bit of an early Wire flavour. Widgykeff – A Town Of Alcoholic Children. Three-piece power-indie / new-wave / grunge stuff, has hint of The Strokes about it. William – Self In Fiction. Poppy grunge power-trio, kind of SST / Sub Pop but far lighter. XYZ Zag And The Coloured Beads – Sawtooth Gripmaster. Quite angular and disjointed indie, i.e. at least one part Beefheart. Maybe two parts. Zealey – The First Chance I Get I’m Out Of Here. Elaborately arranged indie singer songwriter stuff, hard to pin down. Various Classical £4.00 unless specified. Various: British Music on Lyrita from Quad, sampler inc Holst, Parry, Walton, Bliss, Arnold etc, Lyrita / Quad £3.50. CD singles £1.00 unless specified.
