TV/PC/Games Convergence Help

I keep reading about convergence but it seems that the ever increasing complexity of things is preventing this from really happening.

Here's what I'm after:
1 or 2 boxes with a display
Telly
PC functions: wireless internet, word, excel etc
Freeview receiver with PVR (160Gb)

I've looked at a PS3 ('cos I like Gran Turismo) but it doesn't do PC functions and it does not have a freeview receiver. Telly's don't seem to do PC functions and PCs don't seem to have useable freeview and PVR functionality.
Apple TV seems to do nothing useful (and I hate Apple anyway, Apple is the new BMW as far as I'm concerned).

Am I missing something or do I have to buy a PVR, a telly and a desktop repalcement PC to achieve my objectives? (I don't think I can justify a PS3 just to play GT3).

IMHO the mixing of pc's and other video components does'nt really work (unless you want to spend a small fortune!)A good tv coupled with a ps3/pvr will work well in a modest set-up although to take full advantage of the capabilities of the system an extra amp/receiver/speakers would be needed.

You can look at getting a MediaPC (either Windows, Linux, or Mac based).
However, it could well be that the combined cost of separate specialised boxes would be less than an all-in-one solution.

(BTW, I don't get the "we hate Apple" thing. From where I stand, they're a great company genuinely innovating and providing an alternative to a dreary Windoze world.)

It was not intended to be an inflamatory comment and I realise I may have a minority view about this (and BMW's). It comes from my intense dislike of iTunes having used it for a friend to try to organise a music library, I found it very big brotherish in that it kept trying to get me to buy stuff and would not consistently put my music where I wanted it to go. Open format stuff like EAC and FLAC suits me much better.

OK

Incidentally, I find that iTunes does pretty much exactly what I want, and I copy the iTunes folder out to a Linux box!.
But if you don't want it to organise your files, then you can choose the option not to copy content into iTunes when you add things; in that case, iTunes just contains a load of links to things.

S-Man,
Please do not apologise for your views on open formats. It is those who provide proprietary formats and lock the data you have purchased or created into their systems who should be apologising to customers not you.

Mac Mini with a TV card connected to a flat screen monitor and plug your games console straight in. It'll do all PVR functions and has a remote. You may want some external storage, mind.

The mini also does the secondary monitor thing, ie it will play full screen video to a designated monitor whilst routing the desktop to another monitor.

There is no lock-in.
(I use iTunes, and can freely move data between Windows, Mac, iPod, and Linux.)
