  2. Where we are now: The site is back up and running! The character set encoding issue has been fixed so old posts should now look ok. I am currently working on themes/skins etc and I will be deleting the temporary green skin very soon as it has many issues. I will do a very quick variation on the stock blue skin first just to get a light-grey background and san-serif font, and I will set this as default. Later this week I will hopefully add a professional third-party skin in pfm colours (life is way too short to do this crap myself, and I've found one I really like than needs next to no tweaking). We are getting there slowly...

  3. May I please request people check and update their email address if it is out if date. I ask as I’m getting countless bounce errors as the server fails to send notifications through etc. I’ll eventually figure out how to send these to a black hole somewhere, but it makes sense to address it at source as quite a few folk are obviously not getting the thread and conversations notifications they have set in their preferences.

  4. Things you need to know about the new ‘Conversations’ PM system:

    a) DO NOT REPLY TO THE NOTIFICATION EMAIL! I get them, not the intended recipient. I get a lot of them and I do not want them! It is just a notification, log into the site and reply from there.

    b) To delete old conversations use the ‘Leave conversation’ option. This is just delete by another name.

What’s with the metal plate/grille thing on the back? I know nothing about 402s, but 401s certainly don’t have it. Trying to work out what is under it, not a port surely? (401s are sealed-box).

They need a fair bit of amp up ‘em, certainly more than a BBC speaker. Quite a reactive load IIRC, a few pretty decent amps certainly died into a friend’s 401s (NAP 160, Lescon etc).

They look like they have been refoamed the mid especially, I have the earlier 401's, they sound nothing like BBC speakers and are much better in my opinion.
As Tony says they are a difficult load going down below 3 ohms in the bass so only amps which have high current capability and at least 80 plus watts should be used. Efficiency is also low so big amps only but watch out for bottoming the bass units.
On the plus side they have great mid clarity and tuneful reasonably deep bass, very easy to position I had mine in the room corners.
The price seems reasonable for the condition, chrome ones would be higher priced.

They have been up on eBay several times. 402 is a slightly easier load than 401, but they need lots of watts (a good 100W+ amp in my view). A friend had some with a Krell KSA250 and they sounded pretty damn fine. Much more dynamic than BBC designs.

GWM- yes I thought they looked re-foamed as well. He states all original drivers, foams in perfect condition
According to the blurb on 402's the vent is for better power handling as it gets heat away from the power resistors and the xover is improved slightly (4 ohms min impedance).

Thanks for chipping in chaps, main thing is I'm looking for something a bit more open sounding than the Rogers in the highs, with a quicker bass. I could got for Harbeths I suppose as default.
The seller has messaged me saying they are in Italy, which is a bit of a risk, I have always preferred to pick up older gear. Could make a romantic gesture to the wife with a trip!

There is a more expensive pair of 401 on eBay too, but without hearing would be a bit of a punt. Anyone in the midlands got 401's?!

That's to much for the wood version of a 401,they look in good nick but still pricy, the 400 quid for the 402 seems reasonable I paid 200 for completely knackered 401's and had to completely rebuild everything apart from the tweeters.

Reformed original drivers I think, the vent is to cool the resisters, 2 were burnt out in my 401's when I got them.

Harbeths and quick bass don't normally go in the same sentance.

I am in the Midlands (N. Worcestershire) and run 401s that have been fully rebuilt by the Gale specialist (who lives nearby in the Midlands too). Driven by a Roksan K2, I think they sound great. http://www.vintagegale.com/ is the best website for further details on all models.
