  2. Where we are now: The site is back up and running! The character set encoding issue has been fixed so old posts should now look ok. I am currently working on themes/skins etc and I will be deleting the temporary green skin very soon as it has many issues. I will do a very quick variation on the stock blue skin first just to get a light-grey background and san-serif font, and I will set this as default. Later this week I will hopefully add a professional third-party skin in pfm colours (life is way too short to do this crap myself, and I've found one I really like than needs next to no tweaking). We are getting there slowly...

  3. May I please request people check and update their email address if it is out if date. I ask as I’m getting countless bounce errors as the server fails to send notifications through etc. I’ll eventually figure out how to send these to a black hole somewhere, but it makes sense to address it at source as quite a few folk are obviously not getting the thread and conversations notifications they have set in their preferences.

  4. Things you need to know about the new ‘Conversations’ PM system:

    a) DO NOT REPLY TO THE NOTIFICATION EMAIL! I get them, not the intended recipient. I get a lot of them and I do not want them! It is just a notification, log into the site and reply from there.

    b) To delete old conversations use the ‘Leave conversation’ option. This is just delete by another name.

Would a knowledgeable poster point me in the direction of a good starter please? Compilations will be fine, indeed preferable.

    Thank you.

    Rob.

This film covered the genre pretty well, focusing on the obsessive record collecting, label covering etc. The songs are good, so obv you can start with the soundtrack:

My fave is The Night by Frankie Valli.

If you google top Northern Soul classics there are websites galore. Lots of Northern Soul I find a bit dull but as a former obsessive record collector I love the nerdy vinyl search element of it.

Surely only Wigans Ovation - Skiing in the Snow? There's a lot of toot around. Sometimes the tracks were rare for a good reason. Don't let the Northern monkeys have you believe it was the best thing ever. The lack of progress in music lead the scene to eat itself. Some of the better/more commercial/softer tracks were frowned on.

The films are reasonable starting places but don't dismiss southern soul.

Are you just interested or are you a soul lover already?

Wigans Ovation were a boyband put together to jump on the northern soul bandwagon.Skiing in the snow was a cover of this tune done by the Invitations. The scene was a bit in its death throes by this time although it picked up in the early 80s in places such as Stafford.

I know. I was taking the micky. Can you see why I said the scene ate itself?

While people ignore the request by the OP and whitter on about irrelevant crap, if anybody feels like contributing meaningful additions to this thread, can we suggest Northern Soul compilations.

I knew there were knowledgeable people on here!

Thanks to all and especially to Gassor for pointing me towards Spotify. Also looks like the Amazon account is going to get hammered !

This is a whole new genre to me, I'm in my early 50's, how did I miss this for so long? Radio 6 music has to answer for, but in a good way.

    Thanks again one and all.

    Regards,

    Rob.

    Rob,
Tune in radio also has several Northers Soul stations that are 24/7 so I often put these on. My first album was " For Dancers only" Kent 001, it's on Amazon as Cd at about £7 or Vinyl at £16 but you can find it on Discogs much cheaper. Has one of my all time favourite tracks, " in the sunshine" by The Marvellos

The Northern Soul Story, Vols 1-4, are beautifully researched sets of big-hitters from The Twisted Wheel, The Golden Torch, Blackpool Mecca and Wigan Casino. Currently just £3.99 each at Amazon, but FOPP regularly knock them out for £3 a disc. There are gazillions of NS boxsets out there, but these have less filler than most of them, IMHO.

Rob, shame you missed out on the good times, I started in 73, and still attend events, and still collect vinyl, cds, ... like people have said internet radio, loads of choice, amazon cheap and cheerful, . Don't forget some of the better record stores out there, depending on your location, .. A good forum worth checking for everything soul is .. soul source.
But yes beware some so called northern is just pop soul, at best.....
Kent soul vinyl, CD, , essential. Already mentioned. ...but also sony, emi, epic, bringing out quality cd at fair price...good luck with the old wallet.
