1. Things you need to know about the new ‘Conversations’ PM system:

    a) DO NOT REPLY TO THE NOTIFICATION EMAIL! I get them, not the intended recipient. I get a lot of them and I do not want them! It is just a notification, log into the site and reply from there.

    b) To delete old conversations use the ‘Leave conversation’ option. This is just delete by another name.

“collection only” and “PayPal please” seems a dangerous combination.

Wong finish and a lot of work needed on them. My advice is avoid.

I believe some sellers prefer to be paid by PayPal prior to collection of the item they've sold since it avoids buyers turning up and then saying the item's not as described and trying to negotiate a lower price.

    What's wrong with the finish?
The 401Cs that I had 40 years ago looked like that, American Walnut I believe.
The famous ones of course were the 401As in black and chrome, must look a bit out of fashion these days!
Mine always sounded over damped and a bit lifeless (on the end a NAP160).
The price does look a bit steep for what has to be a bit of a gamble so I agree best avoided, even if it does include the (rare) stands.

    There's another pair here

claimed to be teak finish (UK made) rather than the walnut USA made pair.
No stands and no grilles and needing the same refoaming on the (4) woofers but sold as spares or repair at £50 starting price so maybe a bit more worth a punt for someone brave!

If you have to have these, the chrome finish is mandatory

    I have to agree!

The only reason I would want a pair of 401s would be to match my contemporary smoked glass and chrome furniture!

Perhaps I’m in a minority, but I never liked the chrome finish.
    Looked somehow ‘flashy’ to me.

    I didn't think you would!

The 401a was of its time and, like most fashions, it dated rather quickly.

I still remember hearing a pair in Southampton in the 70s which sounded (and looked) stunning at the time.

It's interesting that of the 2 pairs on eBay one of them was made in USA and was in the ubiquitous American walnut finish whilst the other UK made pair were in teak.

I found it strange then, and still do today, how Americans seemed to favour (favor?) the dull as ditchwater walnut finish whilst we in the UK preferred the lighter teak finish.

Was it something to do with Norwegian Wood?

Not that that's teak of course!!

I did, must be quite subtle, or I'm just a bit stupid.
