1. Things you need to know about the new ‘Conversations’ PM system:

    a) DO NOT REPLY TO THE NOTIFICATION EMAIL! I get them, not the intended recipient. I get a lot of them and I do not want them! It is just a notification, log into the site and reply from there.

    b) To delete old conversations use the ‘Leave conversation’ option. This is just delete by another name.

I need to replace my existing cable with 4m lengths of a new cable since I changed over to the Crofts. What should I look at to get the job done for <£100?

I'm running the Crofts into a pair of Harbeth P3-ESRs.

Try some generic 79 strand speaker wire from Maplins. It'll do the job just fine & be <£10.

QED 79 strand or something from Maplins. Will cost well under £100 for 8m. You could spend 10x more for little increase in SQ if money is burning a hole in your pocket :D

Hi murphydog, Ya might want to ask both Tony L and Pat Dixon about using Mogami Cables, as I know Tony is using a Croft Preamp into a Leak Stereo 20 driving Tannoy's with them.

And that Pat's you guy if you're looking to have a pair properly terminated.
    Just a thought.

Don't buy cheap Maplins cable. Get cable from a specialist manufacturer of speaker cable such as Chord - the "Silver Screen" product you can pick up lready terminated from flea bay for £6 per metre or less and it sounds significantly better than cheap cable. It is a twisted pair as opposed to multi strand. I did the comparison with other cables and I know how good the Chrord stuff is.

Whatever you do don't take any notice of anyone on here who may tell you to use any old cable 'cos makes no difference. That is certainly not the case.

    Here we go.

Jaspercat is quite right, they do make a difference.

Suggestions for Mogami are sound as is the Chord notion.

Chord also do a cheaper cable, Leyline, which is good at about 3 quid per meter.

I am using generic 79 strand at the moment, after giving away some VdH cleartrack that I used for many years (wouldn't fit in the trunking anyhow as things have changed around).

However I think I might risk £3/m on some of this Chord stuff so thanks for that suggestion.

I have found that speakers cables all sound different. I would suggest that you might like to get your hands on a few sets. If you hear differences then you are one of those, like me, that can detect differences. You will then have to make a subjective choice. If you hear no differences then buy the cheapest one.

I would use the Dynaudio cables, mostly because they are a reputable company, make good equipment, are based in a lovely neck of the woods and do research their products.

    Mine work very well.

My own experience (FWIW) is that changing one adequate interconnect for another makes vanishingly small differences to SQ whereas changing speaker wire can have small effects. YMMV

In my experience both interconnect cables and speaker cables have made a noticeable difference in many of the systems i have owned over the years. The pricing of some cable is a joke of course but the differences can be substantial and more expensive may not necessarily be better.
However despite what i have just said I did borrow a lot of interconnect cables from my Local Dealer without knowing the price of each. Me and my mate sat down over a weekend and listened to the system with differing cables in place. Our preferences reflected the price of the cables so make of that what you will.
In my view those who say there is no difference in cabling do not have a system revealing enough to show it or have a system and or ears that prefer the balance of cheaper cables. If so good for them.
As with all things hifi try before you buy if possible and try as much as you can to see whats out there.

I would recommend the DNM Reson single strand cable for use with the Harbeths. Very neutral and lets the Harbeths just get on with it.
