1. Things you need to know about the new ‘Conversations’ PM system:

    a) DO NOT REPLY TO THE NOTIFICATION EMAIL! I get them, not the intended recipient. I get a lot of them and I do not want them! It is just a notification, log into the site and reply from there.

    b) To delete old conversations use the ‘Leave conversation’ option. This is just delete by another name.

    Lefty,

I’m not even sure if you need to *manually* focus the lens much. Depth of field is enormous.

Nikon makes a modern fisheye zoom, but it’s $1,700 Cdn. I came across a mint used 16mm f/2.8 AF-D fisheye for $520 Cdn. I figured at the price it was a low-risk purchase. If I liked it, $520 isn’t silly money. And if I didn’t like it, I could get back what I paid.

Suffice it to say that I’m keeping it. It’s a nutty lens, but every once in a while a picture calls out for fishiness.

P.S. Forgot to mention, the lens is tiny. It’s barely bigger than, say, a 50mm f/1.4. It’s nothing at all like fast ultra-wide lenses, whose bulbous front element looks like a bowling ball cut in half.

For me, light = I’m likely to carry it and therefore use it.

No, you don't. Nobody 'needs' a fisheye lens.

you need to email this to showcase or HBO and cash in when they use it as premise for the next AI/twisted-reality BS TV series.

    well done.

3 years ago today, my step daughter was working at the Arena that fateful night, and although (thankfully) not physically injured, is still suffering from the metal effects.

Wow, I am glad she didn't get injured, I would think it would be a life changing experance.

Give her a hug from me if you able.

    Vuk,

Thanks, man. I honestly thought I had goofed when I bought the fisheye, figuring it's a novelty lens that will collect dust the day after I bring it home, but it's turned out to be a lot of fun. And now I can finally recreate that scene when Spock goes bananas after looking at the Medusan without the visor.

Jump to 3:00 if you can't wait.

See your 16mm and raise you an 8mm and a cat!

I do like a wide angle lens.

    Pete,

Have you used the 8mm to recreate a scene from Seinfeld?

it is a bit of a dust collector, but every 6 month or so, i do get the urge. it's a nice way to shake things up a bit.

    Vuk,

Those are cool. I'll have to try mine in fishy mode. So far I've been correcting the fishy distortion.

Should we have a fisheye hommage thread?

Indeed - I can imagine. I'd probably just stop it down to f8 or smaller, set the focus to infinity and shoot away :)

They seem to trade hands for around £250 here. A no brainer at that price. As you say, if I don't like it I can always sell it on and not lose much money.

With wet markets in China being in the news I've re-visited some photographs hopefully from more appealing locations:
