Surely 'popularism', or 'populism', are merely the sentiments which the far right exploit? How far this might lead to 1930's style Fascism in a Moot point, but that it plays into the hands of Global Capitalism and by implication right wing anti democratic forces, is undeniable.

Let's put it this way... 'Yer average' Joe has genuine issues over employment/economy etc., most probably caused by the excesses of the International Greedy Bastards Society. The far right tell 'Joe', that this is all the fault of the 'immigrants/forriners/jews/muslims...' The International Greedy Bastards Society do nothing to disabuse Joe of this.

Joe now has a cause and an enemy. All he now needs is to be given a gun and to be told which way to point it.. Meanwhile, the International Greedy Bastards Society sit back and reap in the coin..

Yes, I still hate the term, though there are vile groups that have no business existing in any decent society and it is the only term thickos on the right seem to understand. They’ll happily use it in connection with Islamist extremism etc, but not to describe the white supremacists/fascists/armed militia that has now occupied the Republican Party and White House. It exists on the fringes of UK politics too and really needs shutting down.

Isn't the IGBS behind the "far right" though Mull? The movements operate on appealing to the lowest common denominator, assured of victory by preaching to the poorly educated and intellectually challenged. Once the malleable masses have installed the IGBS operative in a position of power, that operative is free to line the pockets of their nearest and dearest.

With the advent of the "smart" phone and the spread of social media and unverifiable news sources, it has become remarkably easy to herd these people on an almost daily basis. A lot of money can be made before the operative is forced to throw themselves under the bus and head off to a comfortable retirement.

The answer is of course some form of socialism. Sadly the very word has now been reduced to the point where it is used by the right wing press as a method of instilling fear into the very people that it is geared up to help.

Challenging times for unbridled democracy IMHO. There comes a point where the very principles that lie behind the system create a climate whereby the masses become restless. Capitalism's answer is usually to have an armed conflict given that, economically speaking, this is the only option available that increases the fiscal wellbeing of the IGBS.

By design, this has to be cyclical. And mankind's inherent greed insures that the cycle continues as we never appear to learn from history.

I think you will find the far-right are very fond of Russia. Even the Mail and Express comment sections show the trend. E.g. the top rated comment on a Mail article on Putin today "A real leader, a real politician. Smirking at our incompetence... It's painful but it's true." Another one "he was a spy and a traitor; he knew the risks he was exposing himself to; what ultimatum is May going to put int practice that doesn't endanger the British people further; Putin is laughing at her and rightly so !!!"

A common trend amongst the far-right is support and praise for Putin's Russia over Western democracies, including one's own country.

Joe Hutch Can you hear Talvin Singh?

I guess Putin's approach to LGBT issues wins him lots of friends on the far right.

The Tsar appeals to ‘traditional values’ prevalent amongst the DM Steradent demographic. They’ll get a fright though when they see what’s in wait for England fans when they get to Russia.

There is some truth to what you say. Especially wrt the alt-right many of whom see Putin as a strongman standing against the globalists, and for Christianity. He's also popular amongst many in Eastern Europe who are being drawn to the far-right as they see it as the only vehicle with which to fight the immigration they're seemingly so worried about. They too see him as standing against the globalist agenda.

Not so much with the traditional right-wing in the US, obviously.

Anyway, I gave Russians as an example of a scapegoat, not necessarily for the far-right.

That'll disappoint the Brexiters. They seemed to be desperate for some reason to talk of political chaos in Germany and disruption of the EU.

Seems like their narrative of the imminent collapse of the EU isn't going to plan.
