1. Things you need to know about the new ‘Conversations’ PM system:

    a) DO NOT REPLY TO THE NOTIFICATION EMAIL! I get them, not the intended recipient. I get a lot of them and I do not want them! It is just a notification, log into the site and reply from there.

    b) To delete old conversations use the ‘Leave conversation’ option. This is just delete by another name.

    Some thoughts on this.

First, the circulation list for those DipTels is relatively limited. On the "who benefits?" rationale, and on the technical point that the emails had to have been saved (because as I understand it they delete themselves after three months), this investigation might be methodologically easier than others.

Second, and re the above, the leak was to Oakeshott, rather than by Oakeshott. Neither she, nor Farage, nor Banks, nor any of those other right wing nexus people would have had access to them. With one, obvious, exception.

Third, the Whitehall convention that "leak inquiries never find anything" (more often than not because they are semi-authorised) needs to end. What's happening in Australia right now isn't necessarily the answer, but the sublimation of long term national interest to short term personal or political advantage is out of control.

The thing I’m still struggling to understand is the motivation here. Johnson comes out of it smelling of shit as he failed to defend the ambassador and has himself been projected on large buildings by the ever wonderful Led By Donkeys saying far, far worse about Trump. As such it looks like a losing situation for Banks’ alt-right Brexit project as if anything it benefits Hunt and diminishes their insider Johnson. So what is really going on here? Oakeshott strikes me as pretty thick, but surely she’d have been reluctant to publish anything that could hurt Banks, Farage, Johnson and the rest of them?

Who, among the right wing nexus of which you speak, could possibly have had access to Foreign Office confidential communications in the last...oh...two years?

Oooh, will Jeremy Hunt be heading for the Ecuadorian Embassy?

Someone, possibly advised by someone else who subscribes to the dead cat theory, might have been trying to head off something else. That's often the way these things work.

If May really wants to go down in history she could get the police to arrest everyone for which there are reasonable grounds for an offence being committed, starting with the journalists, editors and proprietors of newspaper involved. One assumes you can keep them in some some time without bail for such offences. Months in the case of national security. Then go to work and find the leak.

If we can't use waterboarding or sodium pentathol in the UK we could ask the CIA to fly them around the world a bit and see if when they bring them back they just happen to have a signed confession or two?

Can you be elected Prime Minister and be banged up for Treason at the same time?

It would be a fitting end for Boris - the Zaphod Beeblebrox of candidates.

Having had dealings with her over many years (bizarrely ,IIRC, she was once the Evening Standard's health correspondent), of many things that could be said about her, she is not thick.

She’s Britain’s Ann Coulter. Ghost writing a book claiming a serving British Prime Minister had put his penis in the mouth of a severed pig’s head was a bold stroke by any stretch of the imagination. Think about it for a moment. Now, she works hand in glove with right wing entryists and her latest piece of ‘investigative journalism’ has been made with a specific political objective just as her audacious accusations against Cameron were. In a word, corrupt.

Apparently unlikely as the emails are sent to hundreds of people.

BTW Dec, how do you know it’s a “he”, is there something you would like to share with the group?

According to Tom Tugendhat, those particular e-mails are not sent though the usual Diptel channels so a very few people would have received it. If that is true then what it means is that either one of the intended recipients leaked it or they played fast and loose with the e-mail, giving it to people beyond the approved distribution who then leaked it.

Not the actual DipTels. The circulation for those is much more limited (and the FCO has had to fight quite hard to make it so)

    According to Murray:

"communications are nowadays effectively encrypted emails, though still known as “telegrams”: to the Americans “cables”. They are widely distributed. These Darroch telegrams would be addressed formally to the Foreign Secretary but have hundreds of other recipients, in the FCO, No.10, Cabinet Office, MOD, DFID, other government departments, MI6, GCHQ, and in scores of other British Embassies abroad. The field of suspects is therefore immense"

Obviously he has been out of the system a few years so it might have changed but as he was a diplomat he would have known who they were going to.

Then hundreds of people need to be investigated.

Motivation is here https://twitter.com/TiceRichard/status/1148911357787627520 "Now it’s time for a pro Brexit businessman to be appointed who can lead a quick US trade deal."

Let's see if Johnson does that.

I don't know for sure because I don't work there, but "communications" (of which there are probably many) are not the same as the specific Alistair Cooke-ish impressionistic emails in question. You and your sources may be better informed however...
