1. Things you need to know about the new ‘Conversations’ PM system:

    a) DO NOT REPLY TO THE NOTIFICATION EMAIL! I get them, not the intended recipient. I get a lot of them and I do not want them! It is just a notification, log into the site and reply from there.

    b) To delete old conversations use the ‘Leave conversation’ option. This is just delete by another name.

Well, I suppose you could say the gimmick worked ... depending on your expectation of something having worked.

One can only hope the focus target wasn't social justice warriors.

Joe, we all know that Greta could have paddled across the Atlantic solo in a kayak made only from my discarded underpants and someone on here would have found reason to bitch about me not getting another couple of wears out of them. That's the way it goes.

my guess is he'd have found some garden worms, filled the (obvs organic cotton and no elastic) pants with leaf mould and the said worms, tucking them into a quiet corner of the compost to be reused on the turnips next spring.

Greta's trip to America may be a little late. A new study from Ohio State University found that suicide rates jumped by 41%, from an average of 15 per 100,000 residents to 21.2 per 100,000 between 2014 and 2016.

    https://www.zmescience.com/science/suicide-rate-usa-rural-8239281/

After reading the article (linked from another site), I browsed the comments on the linking site. This one stood out:

"Look, I won't lie. I live in xxxxxxxx and in a rural area, but I have relatively fast internet. Some days, erotic porn and masturbation keeps me sane.

And I don't mean the semi-violent stuff, I mean like just cuddling and kissing leading up to it. Just pretending, or remembering what my best relationships used to be like. It helps. It helps me remember what real love and real intimacy with someone who believes in me and shares my values was like.

The internet is my recreational drug. I don't think I can really kick it unless I force myself to. But I consider it less expensive and slightly healthier than meth, crack and everything else around my community these days."

I think a postindustrial society is the opposite.

Would that apply to a declining society? I was thinking of the US.

They aren't mutually exclusive imo. A society can be postindustrial and developing (eg Switzerland) or postindustrial and declining. The USA is largely postindustrial, most of Britain certainly is, is the USA in decline?

I think I'd define a PI society as one where manufacturing no longer provides the principal source of revenue and employment and crucially they have gone on to earn a living doing something else like banking or tourism or something else that isn't about manufacturing. This is not to be confused with the likes of Detroit or South Yorkshire where the traditional industries (cars, coal, steel) have declined or disappeared and there hasn't been a replacement.

Isn't it, as a society? How long have you been off-grid?

There's an article in New Yorker magazine entitled "What If We Stop Pretending The Climate Apocalypse Can Be Stopped?"

And it's apparently receiving some backlash, which is either amusing or tragic, depending, given what's going on in Holocaustralia right now.

Depends on how you measure it. Social equality is probably in decline. GDP is up. For Trump and his supporters that's progress. Not for me, or I expect you, but I'm not American and wouldn't have voted for DT if I were.

I just read this article published yesterday -

    https://www.realclearpolitics.com/v...strategy_as_taliban_peace_talks_collapse.html

Can someone tell me what she means? She says she wants to do "everything in my power to stop this crisis from happening, to prevent it." Can someone, anyone, tell me what it is that's going to prevent this from happening?

She goes on to say "And, of course, there's a lot of things you can do in your everyday life, but we cannot be focusing on these individual things you can do. We have to see the full picture."

I think I see a fairly full picture. But let's say I see whatever it is she considers the fullest of pictures. What then? I need some help because all I'm seeing in this is Foo.

edit: the link might die since the text for the link is ass.

It's a serious question. And I'm not asking the question to start an argument or as a gratuitous insult. If the point is to raise awareness, then fine, that's a perfectly good thing to do. But when you start saying you're going to do everything in your power to stop something from happening, which assumes that is even possible, I need something beyond those words. I really don't think that's being unreasonable.
