I so love Herbie Hancock's account of what Miles did with his 'mistake' at a gig in '63. The second quintet has always seemed to me like it is presenting a way of living as much as a style of music - the level of empathy and elegance is so great - and in this story, Herbie shows how Miles's example taught him a way of looking at life. A lot of wisdom here...

It is the Sufi 'STOP!' exercise, learnt in my case via Gurdjieff.....I think Miles knew this instinctively?

That's an interesting analogy, but I don't think it's quite what is happening. As I understand it, your STOP exercise would involve a sudden movement of detachment or withdrawal; that would involve not only a separation of consciousness from the event but a temporal break. I don't think there is any such moment in what Herbie is describing, because with Miles it is all about treating time as a flow and process that doesn't have wrong moments, just opportunities. Herbie is saying that Miles simply didn't perceive his dissonance as a fault, so whilst time stopped for Herbie, Miles simply steered the musical flow in the appropriate direction.
